Integrating Care, Transforming Futures: A New Partnership for Kids in Connecticut

At Connecticut Children’s, we believe the best care treats the whole child—both body and mind. That’s why we’re proud to announce a new partnership with The Village for Families & Children to integrate behavioral health clinicians into pediatric primary care practices across the Connecticut Children’s Care Network.

This collaboration is designed to bring mental health support directly into the medical home, making it easier for families to access care in a familiar, trusted setting. By embedding licensed behavioral health clinicians from The Village within independent pediatric practices, we’re creating a more connected, supportive, and equitable system of care.

Why This Matters

Research from the Children’s Hospital Association shows that families are more likely to use behavioral health services when they’re offered through their primary care provider. It’s convenient, trusted, and allows providers to detect mental health needs early—when intervention can make the biggest difference.

“At Connecticut Children’s, we believe care is most effective when it addresses the whole child — both physical and mental health,” said Jim Shmerling, DHA, FACHE, our President & CEO. “This partnership with The Village reflects our shared commitment to improving access, equity, and outcomes for kids across the state.”

Where We’re Starting

The first integrated site launched in April at Candlewood Valley Pediatrics in New Milford. Rocky Hill Pediatrics will follow in May, with six more practices joining the initiative later this year. These practices are part of our Care Network, which includes:

  • 37 independent primary care practices
  • Over 200 pediatric providers
  • Serving more than 120,000 children statewide

The Power of Partnership

This initiative enhances the state's continuum of care for children and families in every corner of Connecticut. “At The Village, we see firsthand the direct relationship between mental and physical health, with each having a significant impact on the other. When we can identify and address physical and behavioral health concerns earlier on, children are better prepared to thrive,” said Village President and CEO Hector Glynn. “We’re so grateful and excited to be able to work with our longtime partners at Connecticut Children’s."

A Call to Action

To support this growing effort, The Village is hiring pediatric mental health clinicians who will receive advanced training and supervision to serve as behavioral health experts on a multidisciplinary team.
