It's a Brum (and a kids') Ting
And so a hectic few months of Commonwealth Games involvement comes to an end - with millions of young people reached.
Over the past three months Rowson Media has led the digital and social strategy for the Birmingham 2022 Opening and Closing Ceremonies - supplying content and strategic direction to help tell the stories of the shows to new audiences young and old.
During the Games themselves, I teamed up with Alex Balfour, as Chief Editor of the Games operation across Birmingham 2022 and the Commonwealth Games Federation. It was an outstanding time of TikTok successes, athlete and governing body collaboration as well as some brilliant editorial and a slick, digital and social operation with a new team working alongside Host Broadcast partners Sunset & Vine.
You can find the highlights of our Games-time work together (and lots of Alex’s outstanding work in the run up for the CGF) and more details about the great teams involved here.

For the Ceremonies, we told the stories of the stars of the Opening in the run-up - including the raging bull - and we put in place the structure for our on-the-night socials on Twitter, Instagram, and Facebook for Opening and Closing, across Birmingham 2022 and the Commonwealth Games Federation accounts collaborating with big accounts from talent to the BBC. The plan was was to complement the brilliant broadcast show of each night but also deliver content that could be enjoyed out of the linear context of the BBC broadcast.
In the run-up we used some ex-BBC expertise to provide brilliant videos across all platforms - some of the same team that had worked with Chelsea during Perfect Play earlier this year. The digital team were led on the ground for Birmingham Ceremonies by Tashon Reid-Palmer.
But we went a step further than any other event of this nature, with a view to reaching kids who wouldn’t have considered watching the BBC One broadcast.
We collaborated with dance group Flawless and the Opening Ceremony choreographers to create a TikTok Dance to the Commonwealth Games’ unofficial theme tune from BBC Sport: Brum Ting. To date, it’s been viewed 3m times.
Alongside that we worked with Creators Max & Harvey to produce a TikTok live behind the scenes of the athletes’ parade ahead off the Opening Ceremony - while they produced other video too. Those pieces, combined, received almost 30,000 engagements on Max & Harvey's own accounts, harnessing their native audiences rather than trying to inject "young talent" into more official accounts.
The numbers were impressive. We delivered some huge successes.
But we learned loads too, because you always should. What we did do was reach new audiences of kids and younger audiences, but we also took a big step forward in developing a plan for next time.
In less than a year, we’ve already worked with Chelsea FC, Birmingham 2022, the Commonwealth Games Federation, CSM, Sunset & Vine and British Cycling.
If you want to be part of the next time, and reach and engage kids like your event, your governing body, your club, your media organisation or brand might never have done before… then shout.. It’d be great to chat.
