Leading with Adaptability: Matt Walter, CHRO at Medtronic on Building Future-Ready Talent

In this episode, I sit down with Matt Walter , CHRO of Medtronic , to explore one of the most pressing challenges facing healthcare and business today: how do we prepare talent for a future that’s arriving faster than ever?

Matt leads workforce strategy at one of the world’s largest healthcare technology companies. Medtronic is a company evolving rapidly from a global hardware manufacturer to a digital health and software-first innovator. The skills are shifting, the competition for talent is widening, and the mission to serve patients has never been more urgent.

But what stands out most in Matt’s leadership is how deeply personal and principle-driven his journey has been, from his early aspirations in sports psychology to becoming a business-first people leader focused on long-term impact.

Inside This Episode:

From Sports Psychology to CHRO Matt didn’t set out to lead HR, in fact, early on, he thought he’d be a sports psychologist. It was mentors and exposure to business psychology that opened the door to the world of organizational leadership. Today, he brings that same curiosity and performance mindset to Medtronic’s global people strategy.

Reframing the Role of HR “The days of fighting for a seat at the table are over,” Matt says. What matters now is whether HR has a point of view and the business fluency to influence outcomes. His team starts with business goals and works backward, asking where talent is creating or blocking value.

Future-Ready Means Future-Focused → 65% of today’s students will hold jobs that don’t exist yet. → The world faces a shortfall of 11 million healthcare workers by 2045.

Matt’s answer is to invest early. Through the Medtronic Spark initiative, his team is reaching into underserved communities to fund scholarships, build skill pathways, and shape the future of care before the shortage hits.

Culture Change Is a Thread

Matt offers a masterclass in real culture transformation. Most companies define a vision. Some even define the desired behaviors. But few pull the thread all the way through, down to operational decisions that reinforce the culture they claim to build.

Expanding Talent Models in a Digital World As Medtronic shifts from hardware to software, Matt is expanding what talent strategy even means. He’s rethinking not just who the workforce is (global, diverse, digital), but how we engage them, FTEs, contractors, gig workers, and beyond.

Radical Insight: Develop HR Leaders Like Business Leaders Matt’s advice to aspiring HR professionals is simple: “You’re a business leader first, you just happen to be an expert in human capital.” He looks for HR talent who lead with judgment, curiosity, and an appetite for risk, because stepping into discomfort is where real growth happens.

Why This Matters:

If you’re in HR, healthcare, or any rapidly evolving industry, this episode is essential listening. Matt brings both a sharp business lens and a people-first heart to one of the most complex workforce challenges of our time.
