Moving Forward: Exploring New Dimensions in Leadership and Job Satisfaction (#43-2025)
Dear Friend,
Nonprofit work presents unique challenges and unparalleled opportunities for deep engagement and substantial personal growth. This forty-third edition in 2025 (#43-2025) explores how pivoting isn’t just reacting; it’s a strategic art. In HR and finance, instead of changing course out of panic, we should pause, investigate, and respond with intention. Nimbleness is a superpower when rooted in understanding. Pivot not because you’re forced, but because you’re focused.
Last week’s forty-second edition in 2025 (#42-2025) explored how caring for your mental health at work isn’t optional; it’s a strategy. The world inhales chaos and exhales urgency, and our bodies unconsciously follow. To resist that automatic rhythm, we have to intervene. If you have healthcare, schedule therapy like any other appointment and use every covered session. Suppose you don’t seek community-led resources, community groups, running clubs, peer circles, and meditation meetups at recreation centers. Care doesn’t always look like retreats or silence. Sometimes it’s simply choosing not to abandon yourself in between emails, meetings, or deadlines.
Pivoting
We pivot far more often than we admit. In nonprofit finance and HR, we treat pivoting like something forced upon us, a reaction to disappointment, conflict, or misalignment. But what if pivoting wasn’t just a reflex, but an art form? What if nimbleness were recognized not as a nuisance but as a superpower? Pivoting isn’t just changing direction; it’s awareness in motion. It’s the muscle we use daily, whether we acknowledge it or not.
In HR, when culture starts to drift or one person’s behavior erodes trust, the instinct is often to react, move them, remove them, or rewrite the rules. But powerful pivots don’t start with quick fixes. They begin with understanding. What is actually happening? Is this misalignment, misunderstanding, or unmet need? Sometimes the pivot isn’t in the policy, it’s in the response. We steer culture not by panicking, but by pausing before we turn.
Finance works the same way. A budget-to-actual variance triggers alarms, but the most innovative leaders don’t pivot blindly. They investigate. Is this timing? A misclassification? A signal of emerging need? Pivoting should be rooted in research, not reaction. Whether in numbers or people, the goal is the same: pivot with intention. Not because we’re forced, but because we’re focused. When we treat pivoting as a strategy rather than chaos, we turn disruption into leadership.
