Navigating What Comes Next: Advice for Our Interns
Yesterday was college move-in day for one of the special kids in my life. Starting college is such an incredible milestone that no one should take for granted. College will create some of his deepest, most core life memories (good and bad), will challenge him to grow beyond what he can even dream of and will create friends and relationships that will last a lifetime.
I encourage all of the students who are returning to campus - full-time or part-time, on-campus or off - to lean in and take advantage of the experiences available to you. As you do, here are a few pieces of advice that I wish I had heard when I was in your shoes.
1. Be a lifelong learner
The world is constantly evolving. Some of our interns may have even gotten a glimpse of up-and-coming technology during their time with Verizon. With so many changes happening at a rapid pace, it’s essential to evolve your skillset and build the specific skills needed to succeed.
So take that project management course. Earn that IT certification. Pursue your Master's degree. If you keep learning at the forefront, you’ll always be ready for any opportunity that comes your way.
2. Always be open to new opportunities
The most successful people are often those who are curious and continue to grow, regardless of where they are on their career journey. This is why it’s so important to remain open to opportunities, even if they haven’t been on your radar before.
While I’ve spent the majority of my career in HR, I’ve had the opportunity to move across industries — from financial services to telecommunications.
It can be scary to move into unknown or uncharted territory, but let me tell you, it’s worth it. You’ll learn so much about the way different businesses operate, and you’ll make yourself a well-rounded professional.
3. Grow and nurture your network
A big message I’ve shared with our interns this summer is that it is so important to make meaningful connections wherever your career takes you. As a result, I’m so lucky to now be connected to so many of our 2025 interns on LinkedIn!
But seriously, continue to build your networks, no matter where you go! And don’t forget to nurture those relationships, too. The peers, mentors and leaders you connect with could end up being your biggest advocates, opening doors you never knew existed.
4. Don’t be afraid to take up space — your voice matters
When you’re the newest team member in the room, it can feel intimidating to speak up. But it’s important to remember that your voice matters. There’s a reason why your team hired you — they believe in you and know that your perspectives are invaluable.
So, don’t be afraid to raise your hand and make your voice heard. Share that idea that has been on your mind. Be an active participant in conversations and use your voice at the table.
5. Take time for self-reflection
Self-reflection is a key part of your personal and professional development. Take a step back and think about both the work you have done well and the things you could improve upon.
Feedback is a gift, so take advantage of your colleagues and connections, seeking out the advice of a person you trust.
The sky’s the limit — don’t forget to dream big
The future is looking bright with you as our next generation of leaders. Continue to be curious, bring your fresh perspectives into every room you walk into, and share your innovative ideas.
Some outstanding takeaways! One reminder we all need is your journey is your journey and because You are the only YOU each page is beautifully written. Keep the main thing the main thing and Don't Stop Believing!
