July 4th Gasoline Demand: A Historical Outlook

With July 4th just around the corner, understanding historical gasoline demand trends around the holiday can offer valuable insight into market dynamics that may shape 2025. Historically, demand during the July 4th week follows typical holiday patterns: a sharp decline during the holiday, followed by a strong rebound.

In 2024, U.S. same-store week-on-week unleaded gasoline demand fell 4.5% during the July 4th week, then rose 3.6% the following week. While still volatile, these swings were milder than those seen in 2023 and 2022.

Regionally, the Northeast experienced the steepest July 4th week drop in 2024 at 6.9%, but also posted the strongest recovery at 5.3%. The Southwest was an outlier, with the smallest dip at 1.7%, followed by a continued decline of 2.5% the following week. Most other regions returned to positive or flat weekly growth within two weeks after the July 4th week.

This recurring “dip and rebound” pattern strongly suggests 2025 may follow a similar trajectory. However, the softer rebound seen in 2024 could reflect shifting travel behavior and more distributed fuel purchasing habits. Yet it is worth noting that the day of the week on which July 4th falls can significantly influence these figures.

For retailers, this means preparing for short-term volatility, but also anticipating a relatively quick return to normal demand levels after the holiday.

Regional Profit Review

Article content

According to OPIS’ DemandPro and MarginPro data from January through May 2025, average monthly station unleaded gasoline profits declined nationally by 3.26% compared to the same period in 2024. This year-over-year decline stemmed from a couple of factors. First, all regions posted exceptionally strong profits in May 2024 due to a large margin and volume spike, which significantly elevated last year’s baseline. Furthermore, volumes in 2025 decreased across the board compared to 2024. The stronger average 2025 margins were simply unable to fully counter the demand loss.

The West continues to lead the country in average station unleaded gasoline profitability, with an average of $40,573 per month in 2025. However, it also experienced the steepest year-on-year decline, down about 8% from the same 2024 timeframe. The Mid-Continent followed with a 5.63% decrease, while the Northeast saw a more modest 3.05% decline.

The Southwest and Southeast regions, in contrast, bucked the national trend. The Southwest recorded a 2.64% year-over-year increase in average monthly unleaded gasoline profits, while the Southeast followed closely with a 2.22% gain. Despite these increases, both regions still lagged behind the national 2025 monthly average of $23,416, by roughly $3,000 in the Southwest and $5,000 in the Southeast.

These results reflect the dynamic nature of regional markets, where volume shifts and margin pressures manifest differently across the country. Still, the general patterns of profit change remained relatively consistent between the regions.
