Virtual Care Q&A with Maris DeLuca, MS, CCC-SLP
How has telehealth helped make you a better clinician?
Becoming a Virtual Care Specialist has strengthened my ability to adapt and communicate effectively. It’s challenged me to be more flexible and patient as I guide individuals through new technology and therapeutic approaches. I’ve also learned how to streamline my instructions—making them concise yet thorough—to ensure clarity and success in each telehealth session.
Do you feel like you build strong relationships with your patients you treat over telehealth?
Absolutely. I’ve found that strong connections can flourish even through a screen. My patients feel comfortable sharing their thoughts, concerns, and questions with me, which creates a trusting therapeutic relationship. Many have commented that telehealth actually enhances their experience—allowing them to clearly see my demonstrations, such as oral-motor movements for speech sound production, and follow along with greater understanding.
Has it felt rewarding to treat people via telehealth who otherwise may not have been able to receive care?
It’s incredibly rewarding. Telehealth has given me the opportunity to serve individuals who might not have been able to access care due to mobility, transportation, or location challenges. Many patients express deep gratitude for finally being able to receive the therapy they’ve been waiting for. It’s fulfilling to help them discover new ways to challenge themselves and make meaningful progress from the comfort of their own homes.
What's your favorite intervention to do with patients over telehealth?
I love incorporating familiar, meaningful elements into therapy—like singing a patient’s favorite song during a voice session or reminiscing about the layout and special details of their home to support memory and communication. My favorite part of working with this population is always the laughter and connection we share. That personal bond builds trust, and that trust helps my patients thrive and grow throughout our telehealth sessions.
