Vista Health System Marks World Stroke Day with a Call to Action for the Community: Know the Signs, Act Fast, Save Lives

Waukegan, IL – October 29, 2025 – Vista Health System joins healthcare organizations worldwide in recognizing World Stroke Day, raising awareness about one of the leading causes of death and disability. The message is urgent yet hopeful: stroke is preventable, treatable, and recovery is possible — but only if we act fast.

Raising Awareness and Understanding the Impact

Stroke remains a critical public health issue — one that affects families across the nation and within our own community. According to the most current health data from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), stroke is the fifth leading cause of death in the United States, claiming more than 160,000 lives each year and leaving many survivors living with long-term disability.

In Illinois, the Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) reports that 282 residents in our region lost their lives to stroke in 2022. Behind these numbers are families, friends, and neighbors whose lives have been forever changed.

Raising awareness, promoting prevention, and ensuring timely access to quality care are essential steps in reducing stroke risk and improving outcomes — both nationally and locally.

Vista Health System – Primary Stroke Center

Joint Commission Accredited | Level II Trauma Center | Comprehensive Stroke & Emergency Care for Our Community

When a stroke happens, every second counts. Vista Health System is here so you don’t have to face it alone. As a Joint Commission–accredited Primary Stroke Center and Level II Trauma Center, Vista provides advanced, multidisciplinary emergency care 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

Our care extends beyond emergencies. We strive to reduce stroke risk before it happens and support recovery through rehabilitation, ongoing guidance, and coordinated care with our specialists and Vista Physician Group (VPG) primary care providers. Vista remains focused on prevention, recovery, and the ongoing well-being of every patient we serve — providing compassionate, continuous care that supports long-term health and independence.

A Proven Commitment to Stroke Care

Vista Health System has been recognized as a Primary Stroke Center by The Joint Commission since 2007, providing nearly two decades of specialized stroke care for our community.

This commitment extends beyond emergency treatment — it begins in primary care, where prevention and early intervention make the greatest difference. Through Vista Physician Group (VPG), patients work with providers to manage risk factors such as hypertension, diabetes, and high cholesterol — major contributors to stroke. Regular wellness visits and screenings help detect issues early and reduce the likelihood of stroke.

“Our approach to stroke care is collaborative,” said Brooke Lou, Quality Manager and Stroke Coordinator. “From emergency response to rehabilitation and prevention through our primary care network, we focus on connecting each stage of care to improve outcomes and support recovery. Stroke care doesn’t start in the emergency room — it starts with awareness, prevention, and proactive health management.”

The Purpose of World Stroke Day

World Stroke Day promotes understanding and action. Strokes can happen to anyone at any age, but up to 80% are preventable through awareness, healthy habits, and early detection.

This observance reminds us that time is brain — every minute counts. Recognizing the signs and acting quickly can make all the difference in recovery.

Community members are encouraged to: • Learn the signs of stroke using BE FAST (Balance, Eyes, Face, Arm, Speech, Time). • Share this information with others. • Schedule preventive screenings and discuss risk factors with a primary care provider.

When stroke symptoms appear, every minute matters. Vista Health System delivers immediate, coordinated care supported by advanced technology, trained specialists, and strong partnerships — ensuring expert treatment close to home.

  • Regular exams, blood pressure management, and chronic disease prevention with VPG Primary Care
