Are Your Employees Leaking IP via Generative AI?

It’s a conversation I have with increasing frequency these days, whether I'm talking to a CIO at a large enterprise, a CTO at a nimble startup, or a CISO grappling with the latest security frontier. The topic? Generative AI tools like ChatGPT, Bard, and their many cousins. There’s an undeniable buzz, a genuine excitement about the productivity leaps these tools promise.

"Our marketing team is drafting initial campaign ideas in record time," one Head of IT told me recently. "Our developers are using AI to help debug code and it’s shaving hours off their tasks." These are fantastic outcomes, the kind of innovation and efficiency every business strives for. And as a Product Marketing Manager at Aryaka , I love seeing technology empower people to do more.

But then, often in a more cautious tone, comes the follow-up question, the one that hints at an underlying anxiety: "...but what exactly is happening to the information our employees are feeding into these AI models?"

That question, right there, is the crux of what we call "Prompt Insecurity."

The Unseen Data Flow: When Convenience Meets Confidentiality Risk

Let's be clear: when employees use these incredibly powerful Generative AI tools, especially public or free versions, their intention is almost always positive. They’re trying to be more efficient, solve a problem quickly, or find a creative spark. They see a helpful assistant.

The challenge arises from what happens next, often unseen and unconsidered. Every piece of text, every question, every snippet of code, every draft paragraph typed into that AI prompt doesn't just vanish after an answer is generated.

Imagine these scenarios, which are more common than many IT leaders realize:

  • An engineer, stuck on a complex piece of proprietary code, pastes a large section into a public AI model asking for debugging help.
  • A sales manager uploads a draft of a confidential strategic proposal for a major client, asking the AI to "improve the tone" or "check for clarity."
  • A finance team member inputs sensitive (though perhaps anonymized, they hope) company financial data to ask an AI for forecasting assistance or trend analysis.
  • An HR professional uses a free AI tool to help draft an internal memo discussing a sensitive employee relations issue.

In each case, the employee is likely focused on the immediate task and the AI's utility. But from a CIO's or CISO's perspective, a critical question arises: where does that inputted data—your intellectual property, your strategic plans, your sensitive internal communications—actually go?

The "Terms of Service" Trap and the Nature of AI Models

The reality is, when using many publicly accessible AI tools, your data can become:

  1. Part of the Model's Learning Corpus: Many AI models learn from the vast amounts of data they process. Your inputted information could be absorbed, anonymized or not, and used to train the AI further, potentially influencing its future responses for other users.
  2. Subject to Broad Usage Rights: The terms of service for free AI tools often grant the provider extensive rights over the data submitted. Few employees (or even IT departments, in the case of Shadow AI) have the time to scrutinize these lengthy agreements.
  3. Stored on Third-Party Servers: Your data is no longer within your secure environment; it's residing on servers controlled by the AI provider, subject to their security measures (or lack thereof).
  4. Potentially Exposed: Through accidental bugs, security vulnerabilities in the AI platform, or even future changes in the AI provider's data handling policies, your "private" prompts could become less private than you assumed.

This isn't about fear-mongering. It's about understanding the fundamental mechanics of these powerful technologies and the potential data governance blind spots they create, especially when adopted "in the shadows" without IT oversight. The very act of "prompting" can become an unintentional act of data exfiltration.

Moving from Insecurity to Informed AI Use

So, what’s the path forward for IT leaders who want to enable productivity but not at the cost of their organization’s crown jewels? Banning all public AI tools is often impractical and can drive usage further underground, making Shadow AI even harder to manage.

The conversations I have with customers at Aryaka often center on finding a balance. It starts with:

  • Visibility: You first need to understand which AI tools (sanctioned or not) are being used across your enterprise and, crucially, how data is flowing to and from them. This is where solutions that offer deep application and network observability come into play.
  • Education & Policy: Clearly communicating the risks of inputting sensitive data into public AI models is paramount. Employees need to be made aware of what constitutes sensitive information and which tools are (or are not) approved for handling it.
  • Providing Secure Alternatives: If there’s a business need for AI assistance, can the organization provide access to enterprise-grade, secure AI platforms where data handling is governed by your own policies and agreements?

It’s about making sure that the quest for productivity doesn’t inadvertently open the door to your most valuable secrets.
