Struggling to land a full-time role in today’s job market? You’re not alone. Even with polished resumes, networking, and participating in continuous learning, job seekers are finding the process frustrating and discouraging. The truth is: it is tough right now. While you shouldn’t stop participating in these activities, I also see this time as an opportunity to reflect on how else you can leverage your skills. Looking at short-term contract, project, and volunteer work can serve as a strategic career move, not merely a temporary measure. According to The Washington Post (June 2025), economic volatility has driven both job seekers and employers toward short-term and interim roles. Here’s what short-term and project work can offer you: · Bridge employment gaps · Strengthen and showcase skills · Build experience · Expand your network · Boost your confidence and momentum · Gain current references · May lead to full-time roles And when it comes to volunteering, there’s a bonus: you’re also contributing valuable support to organizations in need. It can be hard to make part-time arrangements work for the organisation, team, and individual. But it is possible. In fact, they can more than work. Here are ten mindsets and methods that have served me well over the last 4 years: 1️⃣ Clarify your purpose: be clear on what you want to do with your time outside work and why it matters to you. 2️⃣ Choose (or create) work that fits: avoid struggling to keep up with work that requires 24:7 availability (even if you could do it). 3️⃣ Focus on your strengths: Delegate tasks outside your expertise (e.g., admin, design). 4️⃣ Do fewer things well: Avoid spreading yourself too thin; concentrate on where you can make a big impact. 5️⃣ Create high-impact moments: Deliver maximum value in the limited time you have, especially to create multiplier effects in the time you're not available. 6️⃣ Measure what matters to YOU: Ignore traditional full-time KPIs. 7️⃣ Embrace trade-offs: Acknowledge that you could do more but you've made a choice to do other things. 8️⃣ Define non-negotiables: Be clear about when you are unavailable—and stick to it. 9️⃣ Set your workload limits: Decide how much responsibility you’re willing to carry. 🔟 Invest in learning: Use the three-horizon framework to balance execution with discovery and growth. How do you make your part-time working become a platform for your brilliance? #strategy #leadership #parttimeworking

𝗜𝗳 𝘆𝗼𝘂’𝗿𝗲 𝗮 𝘀𝗼𝗹𝗼𝗽𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗲𝘂𝗿 𝘄𝗵𝗼 𝘄𝗮𝗻𝘁𝘀 𝗺𝗼𝗿𝗲 𝘀𝘁𝗲𝗮𝗱𝘆 𝗶𝗻𝗰𝗼𝗺𝗲, 𝘁𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝘁𝗶𝗽 𝗶𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘆𝗼𝘂! When you’re #selfemployed, finding new work is one of your biggest challenges. Finding long-term, ongoing work is even harder, but that may be changing now that 𝗳𝗿𝗮𝗰𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗹𝗲𝗮𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗿𝗼𝗹𝗲𝘀 are gaining popularity. Per a recent HBR article (link in comments), more than 110,000 individuals now identify as fractional leaders on LinkedIn, up from just 2,000 two years ago. That’s an increase of 5,400%! 😮 More importantly, companies are realizing the benefits of hiring a senior leader on a part-time basis, like one day a week. They get the benefit of the experience without having to pay the high full-time salary. For many small to mid-size companies, they can’t afford a full-time CMO, CHRO, or VP of Business Development, though they know they need the expertise. This type of work is different than consulting which is usually project-based. These roles are also different than interim roles which are only available until the “real person” comes back from leave or the company finds “the right person” to hire full-time. Karina Mikhli, the founder of the online community Fractionals United, clarifies: “𝘉𝘦𝘪𝘯𝘨 𝘧𝘳𝘢𝘤𝘵𝘪𝘰𝘯𝘢𝘭 𝘪𝘴𝘯’𝘵 𝘢𝘣𝘰𝘶𝘵 𝘢 𝘴𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘪𝘧𝘪𝘤 𝘴𝘤𝘰𝘱𝘦 𝘰𝘳 𝘱𝘳𝘰𝘫𝘦𝘤𝘵. Here are some suggestions to get you started. 1. Check out the "What the FRAK" Livestream event next Tuesday, July 16 (link in comments) 2. 💔 Laid off. Now what? When you’ve been laid off, the immediate reaction is often to find another job as quickly as possible. It’s understandable—you want stability, security, and a sense of purpose again. But what if the traditional job hunt isn’t the only path forward? What if there’s a way to take control of your career, leverage your expertise, and design work that fits your life—not the other way around? That’s what Fractional work offers. Fractional work is a growing career model where professionals like you bring their skills and leadership to companies on a part-time or project basis. It’s not just an alternative to full-time employment—it’s a completely different way to think about work. Here’s what’s in it for you: • 🌟 Take control of your career: Choose the projects and companies that excite you. • 🌟 Leverage your expertise: Focus on the work you love and excel at. • 🌟 Enjoy flexibility: Build a schedule that works for your life. • 🌟 Diversify your income: Work with multiple clients to reduce dependence on any single source. • 🌟 Accelerate your next step: Fractional opportunities often move faster than traditional hiring processes. • 🌟 Find fulfillment: Create impact where it matters most, on your terms. Fractional work isn’t for everyone, but for those willing to explore a new path, it can be life-changing. If you’re curious, I’d love to share what I’ve learned and how this path can help you regain not just a job—but hope, freedom, and fulfillment. I wish more students celebrated when they secured part time roles in companies like Coles, Mcdonalds, and David Jones. I get it, it's not your dream job. But as someone in a new country, it provides you leadership, customer service, teamwork... all these skills that are incredibly valuable in your career and show employers you are culturally competent. That said, if you're thinking long-term, don't stop there. Keep searching for a part time role that align with your industry goals. For example: if you want to break into business analytics, a help desk support role in IT is more valuable than working in retail. As an aspiring accountant, a receptionist position at an accounting firm will provide relevant experience that working in transport won’t. If you're aiming to become a data analyst, an inventory or operations support role where you can work with Excel and create reports would be better. The point here is you start wherever you can, and continue aiming to move closer to where you want to be, rather than not starting at all.

One role doesn't define your career. Multiple roles might. Portfolio careers aren't for everyone. But it was a great fit for me. A portfolio career combines multiple income streams, roles, or part-time positions instead of one full-time job. For me, this meant serving as CFO for several growing companies at a time. My full-time job was being a part-time CFO while leading a growing business of my own. Who thrives with this approach? ✅ People who enjoy variety and continuous learning ✅ Those seeking to maximize diverse talents ✅ Professionals balancing family needs with career growth ✅ Executives transitioning between full-time roles ✅ Experts with specialized skills needed across organizations Who might struggle? ❎ Those who crave deep stability and predictability ❎ People who define success by climbing a single career ladder ❎ Professionals who need structured environments to focus ❎ Those who value simplified tax situations and benefits packages The biggest misconception? That portfolio careers lack focus. In reality, the most successful portfolio professionals have a clear value proposition that unites all their work. Looking back, my portfolio approach provided invaluable perspective that made me a stronger CEO. Working across multiple companies while building my own business exposed me to diverse challenges, leadership styles, and business models. 📣 Are you curious about a portfolio career or fractional work?
