New Publication!! 🌍 Overcoming barriers to the adoption of water-saving technologies in Jordan: policy pathways for transforming knowledge, attitudes, and practices💧 Authors: MAHA Al-ZU'BI, Ph.D. Nafn Amdar Youssef Brouziyne Jordan is facing a severe water scarcity crisis, worsened by rapid population growth, climate change, and the overuse of limited groundwater. With per capita water availability at just 61 m³/year—far below the global threshold of 500 m³/year—it’s one of the most water-scarce countries in the world. 🌿 The agricultural sector, which consumes nearly 48% of the country’s freshwater, is hit especially hard. The reliance on inefficient irrigation methods has led to low water productivity, particularly in the highlands, where productivity is only JOD 0.36 per m³, far below the potential achievable with Water Saving Technologies (WSTs). 💡 However, several barriers hinder the adoption of these critical technologies: - Financial Constraints 💸 - Limited Extension Services 📚 - Technical Gaps 🔧 - Unequal Access, especially for smallholders and marginalized communities 🚜 Many farmers struggle to integrate WSTs into their practices without proper guidance and support. Aligning farmers' knowledge, attitudes, and practices (KAP) with water conservation goals is key to ensuring the successful adoption of these technologies. 🌱 To address these challenges, a multi-faceted approach is required: 💧Research & Tailored Support: Researchers can pinpoint adoption barriers, while practitioners offer targeted guidance to overcome them. 💧Policymaker Action: Policies should encourage WST adoption through financial incentives, education, and research. 💧Education & Awareness Campaigns: Farmers need to understand the long-term benefits of WSTs for sustainable farming. 💧Financial Support: Subsidies or low-interest loans can help make these technologies more accessible, especially for smallholders. 💧A Farmer-Centric Approach: A Market Systems Development (MSD) strategy can improve the market system surrounding WSTs, while peer learning and strong extension services offer ongoing support. By tackling these issues, we can ensure long-term water security and agricultural productivity for Jordan. Last week, we released a detailed report chronicling Google's 112 diverse water projects worldwide that hold the potential to replenish over 8 billion gallons annually. How can we best combine learnings from these local initiatives with technologies like AI and precision irrigation to accelerate progress towards water security? This is something I've been thinking about this Earth Month. ICYMI Google is committed to water stewardship, aiming to replenish 120% of the freshwater we consume across our offices and data centers by 2030. This past World Water Day, we shared encouraging progress and highlighted new initiatives focused on the critical nexus of water and agriculture. Here's a snapshot of our global water stewardship efforts: 🟢 We aim to replenish 120% of the freshwater consumed across our operations (offices and data centers, on average) by 2030. 🟢 As of the end of 2024, we are supporting 112 water stewardship projects spread across 68 watersheds globally. 🟢 In 2024 alone, these collective efforts replenished an estimated 4.5 billion gallons of water. 🟢 Once fully implemented, this portfolio of projects has the estimated capacity to replenish over 8 billion gallons annually. Recognizing agriculture's significant water footprint, four of our recently launched partnerships specifically target water management and efficiency in farming communities supplying water to our operational areas. These include: 🔵 Supporting critical water infrastructure for drought-affected smallholder farmers in Chile's Maipo Basin (with Agua Segura & BEF). 🔵 Demonstrating innovative manure drip irrigation to conserve water and protect groundwater in California's dairy industry (with Sustainable Conservation). 🔵 Piloting precision gravity-powered drip irrigation to reduce water demand for rice cultivation in Taiwan (with N-Drip Gravity Micro Irrigation). 🔵 Applying AI-powered tools to help potato farmers in France optimize irrigation, saving water and resources (with xFarm Technologies). These collaborations underscore how targeted investment and technological innovation can support both agricultural livelihoods and water security. 🌍 Why the Future of Corporate Water Strategy Is Shared and Outside Company Walls Amazon, Gap, and Suntory Global Spirits all made major announcements this week, and they’re all pointing to the same water strategy shift. 🔄 Companies that once focused on internal water efficiency are now turning their attention "beyond the fence line" into watersheds, supply chains, and shared aquifers. 🔍 Why the shift? Because the biggest water risks aren’t inside the factory. They’re in the fields, rivers, and infrastructure that support suppliers across the value chain. 1️⃣ Amazon has launched a large-scale water replenishment project in the Yamuna River basin near New Delhi. The effort combines restoration of traditional water bodies (check dams, ponds) with new recharge systems (percolation pits, recharge shafts) to replenish 400+ million litres per year, aligning with its goal to return more water than it uses in India by 2027. 2️⃣ Gap Inc. is funding a 10-year AI-based leak detection initiative with FIDO Tech in Bengaluru, India, a textile supply chain hub. The project will monitor 350 km of pipelines and marks Gap’s first external deployment of water AI, as well as FIDO Tech’s first project in India. 📌 Suntory Global Spirits introduced Water Scape, a new platform that offers groundwater diagnostics, monitoring, and action planning for external stakeholders. Developed in response to declining rainfall in Japan, it is now expanding as a shared tool to help other organisations manage aquifers sustainably. 🔍 Across sectors, 80% to 99% of corporate water footprints lie in the supply chain. (You’ll find examples from different industries on this slide) This growing recognition is prompting companies to rethink procurement models and governance structures. We’re now seeing shifts, including: 📌 Embedding water use and discharge requirements in Supplier Codes of Conduct 📌 Setting specific water reuse, replenishment, or conservation targets for upstream partners 📌 Co-investing in or incentivising shared water infrastructure and digital monitoring platforms Importantly, this isn’t just about environmental compliance anymore. It’s about business continuity, supply chain resilience, and reputation management. Behind Dubai's transformation into a water-recycling powerhouse is this guy: Meet Dawoud Al Hajri — Director General of Dubai Municipality and the architect of one of the world's most ambitious water reuse programs. 💧 He's driven Dubai to a 90% water reuse rate with a goal of 100% by 2030. 💧 Reduced the emirate's reliance on energy-intensive desalination by 30%. 💧 And built a water reuse program delivering $545 million in annual savings by reducing reliance on desalination. What I admire most about Dawoud Al Hajri: → He thinks in systems, not just infrastructure. Dubai's water strategy isn't just about recycling. It's aligned with their Net Zero Carbon Emissions Strategy 2050. Every drop reused cuts greenhouse gas emissions and reduces power consumption. Most water leaders think in silos. Al Hajri connects water, energy, and climate as one integrated challenge. → He prioritizes speed over perfection. While other cities debate water policy for decades, Dubai has been scaling water reclamation for 50+ years. Under Al Hajri's leadership, they've expanded treatment capacity to 1 million cubic meters per day. The Warsan and Jebel Ali plants now irrigate thousands of hectares of green space. Built for deployment, not committees. → He proved infrastructure can be economically profitable. "Dubai's leadership recognised at an early stage that water conservation is key to ensuring sustainable development," Al Hajri said. But he didn't just make it sustainable — he made it profitable. Dubai's water reuse strategy delivers $545 million in annual savings by cutting dependence on energy-intensive desalination and using reclaimed water for irrigation, cooling, and municipal applications. The biggest lesson from him? Water infrastructure doesn't have to be slow, expensive, and government-dependent.
