Life's challenges, whether it be divorce, loss, or personal struggles, can deeply impact an individual's professional life. Here are four ways we can foster a supportive environment for our team during difficult times: 1️⃣ Create a Culture of Compassion: Lead by example by demonstrating empathy and understanding. Encourage open communication and assure your team that it's okay to discuss personal struggles without fear of judgment. By fostering a culture of compassion, you cultivate a supportive work environment where individuals feel valued and understood. 2️⃣ Clarify Roles and Responsibilities: Provide clarity on job expectations and responsibilities, ensuring that your team members understand what is expected of them. By making their roles crystal clear, you alleviate unnecessary stress and uncertainty, allowing them to focus on navigating through life's challenges without added work-related worries. 3️⃣ Flexible Work Arrangements: Recognize that employees may need flexibility to attend to personal matters during challenging times. Offer flexible work arrangements such as remote work options, flexible hours, or additional time off to accommodate their needs. By prioritizing work-life balance, you demonstrate that you value your team's well-being beyond their contributions to the business. 4️⃣ Provide Resources and Support: Ensure that your team members are aware of the resources available to them, both within the company and externally.     Starting a new job is a mix of excitement and nerves. We all know the importance of making a solid first impression, but there's another thing I put high on the priority list when joining a new company... networking. Now, I'm not talking about just shaking hands and remembering names. What I mean is genuinely connecting with people in a way that's going to make my job more enjoyable and effective. 1. Be Approachable and Open: Smile, make eye contact, and be accessible. People are more likely to approach you if you seem friendly.    2. Utilize Onboarding Events: These are great opportunities to meet people. Don’t just stick to your department... branch out to understand the broader business.    3. Schedule Introductory Meetings: Don’t wait for others. Take the initiative to schedule short introductory meetings with teammates and stakeholders. 4. Active Listening: When talking to someone, listen more than you speak. This not only makes a good impression but also helps you gather valuable insights about the team and company culture. 5. Offer Value: Whether it's sharing an article or volunteering for a project, offering something of value creates a two-way street in your professional relationships. 6. Seek Mentorship: Having a mentor in the first month can really accelerate your understanding of the company’s internal landscape. 7. Follow-Up: Always send a quick thank-you note or a message to acknowledge others time and insights. It not only shows your appreciation but also opens the door for future interactions. 8. Use Internal Communication Tools: Platforms like Microsoft Teams have various channels. Participate in conversations and showcase your expertise without overpowering others. 9. Be Consistent: Networking isn’t a one-off activity... it’s about being consistently present and engaged. Don't vanish after the first meeting or interaction. Keep the conversation going.     Build relationships and not a network. "Networking" is cringeworthy for many, especially those who feel it is selfish, wrong, or uncomfortable. The good news is that nobody wants to be at the receiving end of your networking efforts too. If you are trying the same old networking tips that promise to boost your connections but leave you feeling more disconnected than ever, that is because networking is killing relationship building. Stop networking and build genuine relationships. You can do that by thinking about a few things. ➡️ Be genuinely curious - Be interested in learning more about the other person in the conversation. ➡️ Find commonalities - Find common topics like books, kids, dogs, and food but remember that while discussing such common topics can be a good icebreaker, relying solely on these surface-level interests can hinder deeper connections. Dig a little deeper into shared passions or experiences to foster a more meaningful bond. ➡️ Relationships over transactions - Don't treat networking as a transaction. Look for ways to help others genuinely without expecting an immediate return or any return. Building a network based on mutual support and generosity fosters authentic connections that go beyond mere self-interest. ➡️ Notes of gratitude vs. genuine appreciation - Sending notes of gratitude can be powerful, but they lose their impact if they become a routine gesture. Instead, express genuine appreciation when someone has truly made a difference.     The power of relationships can be a multiplier in life... and your career is no exception. Who you know often trumps what you know... and at the executive level, fit-and-finish (as it's referred to amongst headhunters) quite often tips the scale over an above pedigree. So, how do you become better at building relationships? Not just transactionally connecting and networking, but truly building the bonds of trust and going an "inch wide, mile deep" with another human. Curiosity is the true superpower here. While I believe it's more innate from some than others... I also believe we ALL have the ability to build the muscle. One simple shift to start is the move from agreement to insight. Try this in your next few conversations... when you find yourself responding to what someone else says with "I agree," "I disagree," or the equivalent... Slow down and get curious. Instead, maybe ask... "That's an interesting take. I'm curious, have you always looked at things that way?" "That's a powerful perspective. Do you ever find you get friction when you..."
