  • Child Health Month: How Dr Chris Westwood is improving antenatal care in rural South Africa This Child Health Month, we reflect on the crucial role of antenatal care in protecting mothers and children. One person driving change is Dr Chris Westwood, a family medicine registrar and recipient of the Discovery Foundation Rural Individual Award, whose research into antenatal care is reshaping maternal healthcare in rural South Africa. Based at Madwaleni Provincial Hospital in the Eastern Cape, Dr Westwood is conducting crucial research into clinic-based antenatal ultrasound services. His study examines whether providing ultrasound access at local clinics, rather than at hospitals only, can encourage women to attend antenatal visits earlier and more frequently. South Africa’s maternal mortality ratio was 109.6 deaths in every 100,000 live births in 2022. National data shows that 69.9% of pregnant women attend their first antenatal visit before 20 weeks, and about 75.5% complete the minimum four visits recommended by the World Health Organization. “Ultrasound is such a fundamental part of antenatal care, yet in rural areas, it’s not always accessible,” says Dr Westwood. His study, supported by the Discovery Foundation, is reviewing over 1,500 paper-based records from Xhora Community Healthcare Centre to assess the impact of clinic-based antenatal care. Dr Westwood’s personal journey into medicine is deeply rooted in family and purpose. Initially intending on teaching, he changed direction after being inspired by the breadth of challenges medicine could address. Living just two minutes away from the hospital with his wife – also a doctor – and their two young daughters, he has found a great life-work balance. “The best part is that I’m not sacrificing my family life. I can see my wife and daughters during lunch,” he shares. By connecting innovation with empathy, Dr Westwood’s work is helping to rewrite the future of maternal healthcare in South Africa – ensuring that mothers in rural communities can access the care they need, closer to home. #DiscoveryFoundation #ChildHealthMonth #WomensMonth #MaternalHealth #SouthAfrica

  • Supporting 20 years of impact: Helping Hlokomela to care for Limpopo’s rural communities For over 14 years, the Discovery Fund has proudly supported Hlokomela (to care in Sepedi) – a healthcare NGO that has transformed lives in Hoedspruit, Limpopo, and surrounding farming and rural communities. Now, in 2025, we celebrate Hlokomela’s 20-year milestone and the impact of their work with them.   From humble beginnings in response to a gap in healthcare for farm workers, Hlokomela has grown into a beacon of strength, advocacy, and innovation. Started in 2005 with just four employees and 50 patients, Hlokomela has grown into a nationally recognised organisation with 74 staff members, 72 trained community health workers known as Nompilos (isiZulu for “mothers of life”), and reaches more than 60,000 community members each year with essential healthcare and education.   Andronica Mabuya, Head of CSI at Discovery, says: “Partnering with Hlokomela just made complete sense. Our purpose is to make people healthier and to enhance and protect their lives. Hlokomela is not just a health initiative, it’s a movement. It’s a model that deserves to be scaled, replicated, and celebrated.” Congratulations to Christine du Preez, the Board of Trustees and the Hlokomela team. We wish you continued success as you care for communities in the Mopani District in decades to come.   Watch: find out what the hands in Hlokomela’s logo mean. Follow the story of care and perseverance that has seen Christine, her team, and the mothers of life (Nompilos), bring down the prevalence of HIV and give essential healthcare to farmworkers and other underserved communities living in the heart of agriculture and wildlife country. #Hlokomela20Years #DiscoveryFund

  • Rheumatic Fever Week spotlight: Prof Thozama Dubula’s data-driven mission in Mthatha Rheumatic Fever Week (1 to 7 August) turns to the long-overlooked burden of rheumatic diseases, which include, among others, arthritis, gout, and tendinitis. One physician rewriting this story is Professor Thozama Dubula, Head of Internal Medicine and Pharmacology at Nelson Mandela Academic Hospital (NMAH) in Mthatha, Eastern Cape. Rheumatic fever, according to the World Health Organization (WHO), is a condition that occurs when the body’s immune system mounts an excessive response to a throat or skin infection caused by the Group A Streptococcus bacterium (Streptococcus pyogenes). According to the National Institute for Communicable Diseases, South Africa recorded an average of 824 acute rheumatic fever (ARF) cases a year between 2021 and 2024. The Heart and Stroke Foundation’s 2025 report reveals that Rheumatic Heart Disease – a severe complication of ARF – disproportionately affects women aged 20 to 39, while ARF itself is most common in children aged 5 to 14. These numbers highlight the urgency of better screening and data-informed prevention. Supported by the Discovery Foundation’s Rural Institutional Award (2023/2024), Prof Dubula is leading a digital transformation in rheumatology. His vision? To build South Africa’s first patient database focused on capturing and analysing rheumatic disease trends in underserved regions, where diagnoses are often delayed or missed. “Our hospital has been predominantly paper-based, and this has presented challenges, especially in retrieving patient records,” says Prof Dubula. “The Discovery Foundation grant will help us transition to an electronic system, making it easier to manage patient data and conduct long-term research.” With this database, Prof Dubula is not simply digitising records; he’s establishing a foundation for evidence-based care, disease mapping and improved patient follow-up. As Prof Dubula reiterates, “we want to make sure that doctors in rural areas can manage these conditions effectively before needing to refer patients.” The impact extends beyond clinical outcomes. As a professor at Walter Sisulu University, Dubula is training young doctors to thrive in resource-constrained settings, many of whom come from the very communities this project aims to serve. For Prof Dubula, it’s not just about research, it’s about relevance. “We see a lot of referrals from these regions, and it’s not entirely clear whether it’s due to a higher prevalence of conditions like rheumatoid arthritis or because doctors in these areas are more proactive,” he explains. “This will help us answer those questions.”

A New Era Dawns at AIE 2025 At this year’s AIE, we witnessed a moment that will be remembered for years to come: the passing of the presidential baton. We thank Mr. Collin Molepe for his steadfast leadership and dedication in steering the Insurance Institute of South Africa (IISA) through important milestones. We now proudly welcome Zimkhitha Saungweme as the new President. She is only the third woman, and the second Black woman, to hold this position. Her appointment marks a powerful step forward for diversity and representation in IISA’s leadership. Zimkhitha’s rise is a clear signal that the future of insurance leadership is inclusive, bold, and reflective of the communities we serve. This is not just a change in leadership; it is a renewed commitment to progress, equity, and innovation. Here’s to embracing fresh perspectives and shaping an industry that truly reflects us all. #AIE2025 #LeadershipTransition #ZimkhithaSaungweme #BreakingBarriers #DiversityInLeadership #NewBeginnings
