🆕 New report launched at the IRENA Assembly: Solar PV for nature-positive energy transitions A new joint report by the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), the China Renewable Energy Engineering Institute (CREEI) and IUCN shows how large-scale solar photovoltaic (PV) projects can minimise environmental risks while delivering real benefits for biodiversity, ecosystems and local communities. As solar PV continues to drive the global energy transition—already accounting for 42% of installed renewable capacity worldwide—the report highlights why how and where projects are planned matters. With early planning, strong policies and cross-sector collaboration, solar PV can go beyond avoiding harm to actively support ecosystem services, livelihoods and climate resilience. As Rachel Asante-Owusu, Energy Transition Lead at IUCN, noted during the launch, early engagement, shared knowledge and joint action are essential if solar PV is to be scaled in ways that are truly nature-positive. IUCN’s role as a neutral convener helps bring science, policy and practice together where biodiversity and renewable energy must advance side by side. 🌍The International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA), through the Global Geothermal Alliance (GGA), hosted in the margins of the 16th Assembly a high-level ministerial roundtable on geothermal energy, convening ministers, senior policymakers, financiers, industry leaders, and development partners to advance geothermal as a cornerstone of the clean energy transition. The dialogue highlighted a shared conclusion: geothermal can deliver reliable, low-carbon baseload energy at scale, but only when clear policy frameworks, early-stage risk mitigation, and innovative financing mechanisms are firmly in place. Key takeaways from the discussion included: ✔️ The critical role of governments in de-risking exploration through public finance, guarantees, and access to transparent subsurface data ✔️ The importance of stable regulatory frameworks and streamlined permitting to attract private investment ✔️ Growing opportunities to expand geothermal beyond power into heating, cooling, industry, agri-food, and emerging markets such as data centers ✔️ The value of partnerships and capacity building, particularly for emerging markets and small island developing states Country experiences shared by Iceland, Kenya, Hungary, El Salvador, the Netherlands, Dominica, and others demonstrated how targeted public support and strong institutional frameworks can transform geothermal from a high-risk resource into a bankable and investable energy solution.
