The Kennedy Green @ 2444 Eglinton groundbreaking was truly a community event. So many people braved the cold (and donned a hat!), including a huge contingent from the co-op housing sector! This project has been touched by many hands and we were delighted so many partners, supporters and cheerleaders could grab a shovel to mark the occasion. We’re proud to share a major milestone for Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto and Toronto’s co-op housing movement: we broke ground on Kennedy Green at 2444 Eglinton Ave. E. It was an incredible way to cap off #NationalHousingWeek! Kennedy Green is the largest new co-op housing development Canada has seen in more than 30 years and marks the beginning of a new era for co-ops in our city. Thanks to substantial investments from Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation (CMHC) Société canadienne d'hypothèques et de logement(SCHL) and City of Toronto, this project will bring 612 new rent-controlled co-op homes to Scarborough, with a mix of affordable and market units – all part of a vibrant transit-oriented community of over 900 homes. We were honoured to be joined by MP Salma Zahid (Scarborough Centre-Don Valley East), Mayor Olivia Chow and Councillors Michael Thompson (Scarborough Centre), Jamaal Myers (Scarborough North) and Paula Fletcher (Toronto-Danforth). We would like to give a huge thank you our City partners at the Housing Secretariat and Development Review – Jag Sharma, Doug Rollins, Ryan Santiago, Valesa Faria and Abi Bond – whose dedication and speed helped this project get its zoning approval in record time! A big shout-out to our land partners CreateTO: Vic Gupta, Michael Norton, Jason Chen, Simon McKenzie, Susan O'Neill, James Wattie and Mary Ormond. We also wouldn’t be here without our development partners Windmill Development Group (Jeremy Reeds, CPA, CA, Ryan Dorman, Courtney Flood, CPA, Stephen Savell, Dan Van Leeuwen) and Civic Developments (Matthew Cohen, Peter Venetas, Connor Gregory). And of course, gratitude to our consultants Henriquez Partners Architects, CCxA, SKYGRiD, RJC Engineers. City building takes a village! #AffordableHousing #Toronto #CooperativeHousing #TransitOrientedDevelopment #SustainableCommunity

I’m proud to have stood side by side with our partners CreateTO, Co-operative Housing Federation of Toronto, and Civic Developments as we broke ground at 2444 Eglinton Avenue East. This once vacant parking lot will soon be transformed into 918 new homes, including 612 affordable and market-rent controlled cooperative units. None of this would be possible without trust, shared vision, and collaboration across sectors. Together, our team has shown that public, private, and non-profit partners can come together to deliver the kind of meaningful, transit-oriented affordable housing at scale that our country needs. I’m honoured to be part of a team that is aligning purpose with delivery, and building community, security and opportunity for families who need it most. I can’t wait to see our vision come to life.
