On November 13th in Montréal, the Novisto 2025 ESG Forum brought together 170+ sustainability practitioners for a full day of substantive dialogue on how organizations are ℎ𝑜𝑙𝑑𝑖𝑛𝑔 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑙𝑖𝑛𝑒 on sustainability amid shifting expectations, scrutiny, and market pressures. Here are the top three takeaways from the day: 1️⃣ The integration mandate: ESG is core business The Forum underscored that the time for debate is over; the time for integration is now. With climate risks accelerating and stakeholders demanding clarity, ESG is rapidly becoming a core business capability. Across sessions, discussions returned to data quality, governance, regulation, and resilience — with a shared understanding that progress requires long-term investment and cross-functional alignment. 2️⃣ Reframing sustainability as financial resilience A recurring message: sustainability must be translated into the language of finance to drive meaningful action. Investor demand for decision-useful E, S, and G data remains strong, reinforcing its role in capital allocation and market trust. Achieving financial alignment requires close collaboration between sustainability, finance, and risk teams, supported by strong internal controls over ESG data. 3️⃣ The data backbone: Closing the technology gap With disclosure becoming mandatory, digitized, and assured, the importance of high-quality ESG data has never been greater. Yet many organizations still lack the systems needed to support sustainability at scale. SB 253 vs. SB 261: California Climate Disclosure Clarified Following yesterday’s (November 18th) court ruling, there is critical clarity for preparers: 🛑 The (Partial) Pause: The temporary administrative stay granted by the Ninth Circuit applies only to SB 261 (Climate-Related Financial Risk Act).  SB 253 (Climate Corporate Data Accountability Act) remains in full force for companies doing business in California with >$1 Billion in annual global revenue. ✅ The Reality:  A pause in regulation doesn’t pause your financial exposure. Climate events—like wildfires, drought, and supply chain instability—are fundamental financial risks. Measuring and tracking these risks is simply good business sense for resilience and continuity. 📅 Current SB 253 Requirements: Scope 1 & 2 Emissions: First public filing expected in 2026 Scope 3 Emissions: First public filing expected in 2027 Enforcement: While CARB signals "soft enforcement" for good-faith efforts in the first year, the statutory reporting timelines are still in place.
