Joy Singhal says The Afghan Red Crescent Society (ARCS) deployed emergency teams within hours of the earthquake and continues to work tirelessly on the ground, coordinating with authorities and local communities on the response. It’s one of the most demanding and unusual jobs in the world today. It’s being done by the crew of the Ocean Viking rescue vessel, as it patrols the Mediterranean Sea, saving the lives of people who find themselves in deep distress at sea. Only a week ago, after this podcast was recorded, the Ocean Viking was hit by multiple gunshots. In this new episode of Red Vest podcast, we speak to two crew members who share the daily frustrations, joys, horrors and signs of hope that come with their life-saving work. A lack of food kills more slowly, but just as surely as a bomb. The declaration of famine in #Gaza is not merely a reflection of urgency, it is an unequivocal call to action. Staff and volunteers from the Palestine Red Crescent are not immune to the hunger facing Gaza right now. They are continuing to risk their own lives for others, while also suffering from hunger and desperately struggling to find food for their families. Humanitarians need protection from all that threatens them.
