Happy to share concrete actions from our colleagues on the Bolivian Altiplano where water scarcity is such a big challenge to agroecological transition.💧 🌱
Huge thanks to SOR4D Solution-oriented Research for Development for supporting our SCALAGRO project !

Action that makes tremendous change !
More than 15 km of irrigation pipelines have been installed by ADEMA in cooperation with local communities of the Bolivian Antiplano, in the frame of the SCALAGRO solutions-oriented project supported by SOR4D.
This investment in water access responds to one of the key challenges that was identified in a participatory assessment on scaling up agroecology in the region.
A total of 8 km of main and 9 km of secondary pipelines now bring irrigation to 80 family land plots, where farmers are now enabled to grow onions, carrots, turnips, and garlic - all using bio-inputs to manage pests naturally and improve soil fertility.
These crops will significantly improve local populations' diets, while surpluses can be sold - increasing farmers' incomes and resilience.
By addressing water scarcity, the project partners strengthen the foundation for broader agroecological transitions - helping rural families adapt to climate change and contribute to fairer, more resilient food systems.

Fascinating deep dive into the world of Black Soldier Flies (BSF) and the @Sustainable Waste-based Insect Farming Technologies (SWIFT), an SOR4D Solution-oriented Research for Development with Christian Zurbrügg , Dr. Daniela A. Peguero and @isaac at Eawag.
With increasing #food insecurity and population growth, resilience and strengthening of local food production for local markets is critical. Furthermore, in sub-Saharan Africa, poultry, pig and fish are the fastest growing #agricultural sectors, but are unable to realize their full potential due to the high cost of feed. In rural and urban areas, the challenges for Africa’s female and younger population for #employment are particularly complex, constrained by land access, natural resources, finance, technology, information and education, all creating difficulties to acquire a livelihood and contribute to the local economy. In #waste management, the need for improved practices is highly relevant. Waste is a challenge rather than a resource. Dumping and open burning of waste results in greenhouse gas emissions, health and environmental threats.
Waste-based BSF #insect farming helps alleviate all these issues focussing on three sustainable development challenges: food security, job and livelihood creation, and environmental protection. It also reduces #greenhouse gas emissions by more than 1tCO2eq by ton of waste. Waste-based BSF insect farming can be developed on-farm as a side activity or as a small and medium business and provides a new livelihood opportunity for women and youth farmers or entrepreneurs.

Last week, the Swiss–Ethiopian research team of the project “Traceability systems and landscape approaches for sustainable coffee trade” presented to leading companies in the Ethiopian coffee sector a scientifically grounded and easy-to-apply traceability system designed to ensure deforestation-free value chains.
💡 The project led by #CDE (Universität Bern) and the Water and Land Resource Center (WLRC) seeks to demonstrate how the EU Regulation on Deforestation-free Products (#EUDR) can be applied in a context-sensitive way.
During the field visit to the Yirgacheffe region, the team met coffee farmers cultivating high-value coffee in traditional agroforestry systems — landscapes of remarkable ecological importance, recognized by UNESCO as cultural heritage.
The delegation also met with the Embassy of Switzerland in Addis Ababa to discuss the project’s intermediate outcomes and and ways forward.
However, the visit also highlighted a key challenge: the prices Ethiopian agroforestry farmers receive still do not reflect the true ecosystem value embedded in their sustainable production practices.
The project is funded by SOR4D Solution-oriented Research for Development, a funding scheme of Schweizerischer Nationalfonds SNF and Direktion für Entwicklung und Zusammenarbeit.
