How do we build an energy system that can handle climate extremes, sharp demand spikes, and still accelerate the transition? This very challenge was at the heart of the panel I joined yesterday at Gastech Exhibition & Conference in Milan: “Building and Investing in Future-Ready Resilient Power Grids to Meet Sharp Demand Spikes”. My personal key takeaways from the discussion were:  - Decarbonisation and security of supply must go hand in hand: Electrification will increase demand significantly – from transport to data centres. Flexible, dispatchable generation is needed to complement renewables and avoid capacity gaps.  - Gas remains vital for Europe’s energy system: It has already enabled a faster coal phase-out, and with CCUS and hydrogen-ready technologies, gas-fired assets can underpin resilience in a decarbonised system. LNG diversification, especially with partners like the U.S., is essential.  - Clear frameworks are needed: Industry is ready to invest – at Uniper, we plan to invest about €8 billion in our transformation by the early 2030s. But governments must provide timely tenders and robust capacity markets. It is our job to build a future that is both decarbonised and dependable. Our track record with Canada is strong, and the potential ahead is even stronger as we secure today’s gas and build tomorrow’s cleaner fuels – today’s meetings confirmed this again. I just returned from the Embassy of Canada to Germany | Ambassade du Canada en Allemagne in Berlin after a very constructive round table discussion on LNG and critical minerals - held on the occasion of Mark Carney’s visit to Germany. It was good to have Germany’s Federal Minister for Economic Affairs, Katherina Reiche, at the table as well. I also had the opportunity to discuss energy cooperation with the Canadian Energy Minister Timothy Hodgson. Uniper has a long-established business in Canada: our Calgary office has been active in gas trading for many years, and we’ve also recently finalised an eight-year physical gas agreement with Tourmaline - Canada’s largest producer of natural gas - from 2028 onwards. Looking ahead, as well as LNG, our focus for overseas hydrogen imports will be ammonia, and Canada has the ingredients to make this work: vast renewable potential and clear political backing. Together with the Canada–Germany memorandum of understanding on hydrogen imports, Canada will be central to bringing green fuels into Europe.
