Dear Founders, DON'T just give away board seats... ...especially at seed stage. True story. Investor demands three board seats for a seed round. Founder asks me, “What should I do?” My advice? Back away. Fast. As fast as humanly possible. 🚀 🚨 Here’s why: 🚨 A board seat isn’t just a favor— ☑️ It’s control. ☑️ It’s leverage. ☑️ It’s a long-term power shift. And once you give it away, it's near impossible to get it back. 😬 Boards are powerful. They can drive companies to greatness... Or drive founders out of their own business. At seed stage, your only job is to build and sell. You don’t have time for governance, board politics, or investor power plays. A board can be an asset—BUT only if you know how to run it. Otherwise? It will run you. So before handing over a seat, ask yourself: 👉 Would I hire this person to run my company? 👉 Will they fight for my vision—or fight me on it? 👉 Do they deserve long-term influence over my business? Exposing the number one reason companies fail. Yesterday, I was talking with a friend at a well known VC fund. I asked them one question. “What’s the biggest reason companies fail?” They didn’t say ideas or funding or product-market fit or even access to customers. Instead, they said without hesitation that hiring the right talent is the main reason companies fail. Not getting the right people, fast enough. Because when you pull back the curtains, most startups don’t die from lack of ideas. They die from lack of execution. And execution always comes down to the right people. The companies I work with daily have identified this. In fact, we talk about hires as multipliers to their business. That’s why they’re able to go from bootstrap to exit. They don’t need to overhire or always be stuck raising money, they hire less, but better people. Because while everyone is running the same systems on the same machines and on the same 24 hour clock, the companies that succeed the most are investing in talent like it’s their secret sauce for growth because it is. Everyone talks endlessly about burn rates, runways, and CAC. But almost no one talks about the exponential value of hiring right. The right hire compounds. They move faster. They raise the bar. They make everyone better. But the wrong one slows everything down. So if you want more risk in your business, go cut corners on recruiting. Or you can treat hiring like the investment that drives every other return. Like this if you think great people make the most impact at your company.

Most founders don’t burn out because they don’t know enough. They burn out because they stop noticing what matters. Let me explain…. Two founders with similar credentials. Same drive. Same network. Same hustle. But one builds a company that people feel proud to work at. The other builds a company that people quietly endure. What makes the difference? Not just what they know. But what they notice. ⤷ They notice when tension is rising, even if no one says a word. ⤷ They catch when a high performer is quietly disengaging. ⤷ They pay attention not just to KPIs, but to how people feel walking out of their 1:1s. Because building a business isn’t just about process. It’s about presence. You can hire for operations. You can outsource design. But you can’t delegate emotional tone. And the emotional tone you set? That’s what shapes your culture long after the SOPs are forgotten. So if you’re scaling a team, don’t just ask, “What do I need to know?” Ask, “What am I not noticing?”

I talk to VC-backed founders every day. Many of them have one thing in common: They’re running out of cash. Not because they have a bad product. Because they are set up to fail. They are told to hire fast, scale scale scale. But nobody teaches them the one thing that actually keeps a startup alive: How to sell. Let's be honest you can have the best product in the world. A great brand. Backing of top-tier investors. But if you can’t sell you’ll run out of time and cash. Founders don’t fail because their ideas are bad. They fail because they never learned how to generate revenue themselves. And I always advise founders before you scale, before you raise, before you hire: Learn to sell. Which is why I decided to help as many founders as I can sell better. Founders: what’s your biggest lesson about learning how to sell?

I once worked with a founder who was ready to give up on fundraising because it 'wasnt working'. It took me 3 questions to figure out that this was BS. Me: How many VCs have you actually met? Founder: About 10 Me: How many funds did you contact to get those meetings Founder: 25 Me: And, how many of these people took a second meeting with you? Founder: 5, but they all rejected me afterwards Me: ??? After a bit more interrogation, I figured out why my founder friend was depressed. She was spending too much time on VC Twitter. All those headlines and tweets about oversubscribed rounds and multiple term sheets made her feel like a failure after 25 rejections. And because she was obsessing over the rejection itself, she missed all of the positive signals hiding in lead up to the each no. - 40% of the funds she contacted wanted to meet her (vs many founders who are stuck at <5%) - 50% of them wanted to take a 2nd call (vs <10% on average) If nobody wanted to take a meeting or she couldn't get past the 1st calls, then being quitting might have made sense. But in the grand scheme of things she was winning, she just couldn't see it. So I gave her this advice - change nothing and reach out to more VCs. A few weeks, later term sheets started coming in. The cold hard truth is that most founders need to meet about 50 VCs to get a term sheet. So, if you are one of the lucky few who can consistently get meetings and are regularly progressing past the first call - then please keep going, you're about to win!

Some people do brain yoga. I write for founders. Because founder content isn’t just “let’s write a nice post.” ➤ Half the data is confidential, ➤ and the other half is emotionally sensitive. So, you have to say it without saying it. But honestly, that’s where the fun begins. That’s when you stop being a content writer and start becoming a strategist. You have to think in layers: → What’s the founder feeling? → What do we want the audience to feel? → What can’t we say? → And how do we still make it land? It’s exhausting, yeah. But also kind of addictive. Because every founder comes with a different lens. And I get to learn how to shape stories around them, not just for them.

Being a startup founder is often about surviving the emotional rollercoaster without losing your mind. Ways to stay grounded: 1. Name your emotions. If you can admit you’re panicking, you can manage it. 2. Set boundaries. Your Slack will never stop pinging. Decide what’s worth your energy. 3. Find outside perspective. A mentor, friend, or spouse who tells you the truth. 4. Celebrate micro-wins. Small wins keep you moving. Emotional resilience is built one messy, chaotic, and slightly terrifying day at a time.

Founders: Validating demand for a product that's in a mature category is the biggest waste of your time. The mere fact that the category exists IS PROOF of demand. People already buy CRMs. They already buy email apps. They already buy marketing automation platforms. Yet I keep meeting founders that say they're "validating demand" for their new CRM. This "validation" is usually just code for: "We don't' have a clear reason why the world needs another one." Instead, these founders should be looking for gaps. 🕵🏻‍♂️ → Underserved segments with unique needs → Painful limitations in current products → New workflows or adjacent use cases no one is serving These gaps represent the real market opportunities that could be exploited.
