One of the most common – and quietly damaging – challenges I’ve seen across agencies over the years is a lack of clarity around profitability. I’ve run agencies, acquired them, sat on boards, and advised leadership teams through growth and downturns. And across all of those contexts, this same issue repeats: revenue looks OK, teams are busy, clients seem happy… but when the dust settles, the margins are thin – or worse, gone entirely. This is particularly acute in difficult markets. Since 2020, many agencies have been operating under pressure: pushing hard to retain work, win new business, keep teams busy. In that kind of environment, attention naturally shifts to delivery and away from financial precision. But that’s often when the cracks start to form. What usually causes the erosion of profit isn’t one big mistake - there's no silver bullet to fix it either - it’s a combination of smaller, persistent pressures: • Scope creep that doesn’t get flagged early • Over-servicing in the name of client satisfaction • Under-pricing to stay competitive • Over-promising to secure deals • Inconsistent time tracking • Limited visibility into actual performance during delivery • Lack of variable costs, meaning profit from a single quarter is destroyed with one month of under utilised team members. When these pressures stack up across multiple projects, the effect on the bottom line can be significant – and it’s rarely spotted in real time. By the time end-of-month figures arrive, the damage is done. What makes the biggest difference is having a live, accurate view of how a project is tracking against budget. That visibility allows teams to course correct early, rather than post-rationalise later. But achieving that in a fast-moving, people-driven environment is easier said than done – especially when multiple systems, spreadsheets, and habits are involved. 🌍 Are Venture Studios About to Leverage the Cluster Effect? Clusters as in regional or vertical are well-known in entrepreneurship. But what we see now is venture studios leveraging the cluster effect on a micro level. What emerges in clusters are the following: Talent pools deepen 💡 Knowledge spills over 🚀 Partnerships form faster 🤝 Productivity rises 📈 Now imagine a venture studio tapping into this ecosystem thinking allowing competition, co-opetition and collaboration under the same roof. Competition drives total market growth by fostering innovation, increasing efficiency, and expanding consumer choice, eventually leading to lower prices and better quality products. Psychology and history tell us competition and proximity fuel growth: ✅ Coke vending machines sold more when Pepsi had one standing next to it (as did Pepsi’s). ✅ Volvo and Scania, born from the same Swedish cluster, pushed each other to global dominance although coming from a market not big enough for even one of them. ✅ Steve Jobs pitted Apple teams against each other to spark innovation (however, to get the most out of that information sharing would have been necessary). 👉 So here’s the question: Will we see venture studios launching “twin startups” based on similar ideas but with different teams, using the cluster effect to drive innovation, adoption, and success? ⚖️ What speaks for it?
