I rode from Montreal to Quebec City with the Construction Santé Montréal (CSM) team over two seasons in support of the Segal Cancer Centre at the Jewish General Hospital.
A great cause and a great ride.

  • An Introduction to Sustainable Housing Design

A report for ES3901: Supervising Professor J. Earnshaw, Trent University

So, I started early on this "HOUSE+" adventure. Generally speaking, the industry hasn't changed all that much.
    I am still an optimist.

Disruptive policies like Brussels' Energy Efficiency Directive certainly help but there's plenty of work to do in the marketplace. I believe automation, prefabrication and consumer preference (consumer education) will drive this change. Supply chains will have to adapt.

During 2010- 2011, HOUSE+ spent significant resources researching and developing a cost-effective, super high-performing light gauge steel framed model dwelling to exceed Passivhaus/ SEAI DEAP A1 standard and meet UK Code for Sustainable Homes Level 6 (Net Zero C02 Emissions), using off-site construction methodology and very impressive architectural design intent.

The performance standard primarily relies upon considered site response, proprietary envelope detailing with the cancellation of thermal bridging effect, plus significant building integrated photovoltaic (BIPV) systems; which result in very low specific space heating requirements and the total elimination of fossil fuel burning on site.

We undertook proof-of-concept energy modeling using the Passivhaus Institut’s Passive House Planning Package (PHPP) and Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory (LBNL) two-dimensional heat transfer software THERM, among other applications.

Special Care is part of a continuum of State care available to children and young people.

Special Care is short term, stabilising and safe care in a secured therapeutic environment. The aim of Special Care is to provide an individualised programme of support and skilled therapeutic intervention which will enable the child or young person to stabilise and then move to a less secure placement based on their assessed needs. Given the restriction on the child or young person’s liberty, a placement in Special Care can only be made pursuant to an Order of the High Court.

Tusla, the Child and Family Agency, provide and maintain Special Care Units.

Construction processes proceeded in parallel to post-Financial Close design development and external design quality review, adding significant pressure to the timely production of a final compliant design solution. I was solely responsible for overseeing and managing the design of two hospital blocks worth in excess of $250M (construction cost), plus certain site- wide solutions including the project LEED® deliverable. (I then became the Compliance and Handover Manager.)

    Submitted to:
Board of Directors, Santé Montréal Collectif CJV SEC
    ___

Procurement, implementation and management of a preferred field data management tool (SaaS platform) became my direct and total responsibility within the CJV, due both to a specific request by the Project Director and also an obvious need, upon creation of the new Compliance and Handover department in Q1 2013, for better technology to help Construction Santé Montréal successfully manage the complex and sizeable completion tasks as required by the P3 project agreement(s).

Following the Board’s acceptance of this report (and all associated budgets for approval), I proceeded to close a project-based commercial agreement with Latista Technologies, Inc. in Q2 2013. I subsequently hired a Latista Administrator and Implementation Manager to assist in a Live Pilot and then comprehensive platform implementation under a very structured project software (and hardware) roll-out.

During this time I was directly responsible for day-to-day delivery of this €410M state-of-the-art facility on the client side, including the local coordination of all sub-consultant team members.

Substantial project management skills were required for timely delivery of RFI documentation, attendance of site-based contractor design workshops, maintenance of quality expectations and the management of related information flow between the client, the project management team and various main building works and specialist contractors under separate appointment.
