It was a great pleasure to contribute to the Global Infrastructure Resilience Report 2025 #GIR2025 from Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure and apply the key findings in several workshops flagging the urgent need to embed resilience into infrastructure planning and investment. The report provides a practical roadmap across four key pillars: #technology, #finance, #governance and #naturebasedsolutions (#NbS). On 7 October 2025, the Urban Transitions Mission Centre, the Urban Transitions Mission and ICLEI South Asia , in collaboration with the Coalition for Disaster Resilient Infrastructure (CDRI), organised a regional foresight workshop for cities in India. The event brought together around thirty urban leaders, municipal representatives, experts, private-sector actors, and academics from across India and South Asia, including Bangalore, Leh, Vadodara and Thimphu (Bhutan). The workshop aimed to help cities anticipate long-term challenges and co-develop strategic pathways toward climate resilience and Net-Zero. Four resulting scenarios were developed around a fictional composite metropolis, Indraprastha, allowing diverse stakeholders to work creatively beyond the constraints of their own cities. The exercise generated both exploratory insights and practical strategic directions, offering a flexible foundation for continued dialogue, future policy reflection, and strengthened collaboration among participating cities as they navigate their Net-Zero transitions. Working on the Global Infrastructure Resilience Report 2025 (#GIR2025) has been one of the most enriching learning experiences of my year. A #biodiversity #crisis is unfolding just as urgently as the #climate #crisis, and #infrastructure development sits right at the centre of both. As countries expand transport networks, water systems, energy grids, and urban spaces, the pressures on ecosystems continue to increase. At the same time, these ecosystems provide irreplaceable services that enable communities and economies to thrive. What gives me hope is that we still have a window to #rethink how we #design, #build, #operate, and #decommission infrastructure—moving beyond a mindset of mitigating harm through EIAs and SIAs, toward solutions that actively enhance ecological health while delivering essential services. Through Deltares’ involvement in #GIR2025, I deepened my understanding of nature-based solutions (#NbS) and their role in strengthening infrastructure #resilience. The report emphasizes that NbS is not a silver bullet. NbS is one of many tools available to infrastructure agencies. If used thoughtfully—grounded in science, local context, governance readiness, robust monitoring systems, multistakeholder participation, appropriate financing structures, and long-term flexible implementation approaches—NbS can unlock #resilience #dividends while restoring the natural systems we depend on. Our humble contribution, from Deltares and partners, was to try to piece together a practical pathway that infrastructure and planning agencies can use to leverage NbS alongside engineering, financial, and institutional approaches for more resilient and regenerative systems. This work was only possible because of the amazing people I had the privilege of learning from and collaborating with.
