DMART Q3FY25: Quick Thoughts DMart - Avenue Supermarts Ltd Q3 results were marked by 3 key things -         Recovery in Revenue Growth -         Margin compression   -         Surprising announcement of management change Consolidated Revenue growth for the company improved to ~18% in the third quarter led by -         Addition of 22 new stores this year -         8.3% Growth in Same Store Sales -         25% growth in DMART Ready in Q3 However, from a stock market perspective, this revenue growth surprise may have been priced in already as the stock rallied 10% after the company released it’s pre-earnings Q3 update last week. EBITDA margin compression of 60 bps from 8.3% to 7.6%  was led by 20 bps impact in each, Gross Margins, Employee Expenses and Operating Expenses which  the management attributes to -         Increased intensity in discounting in the FMCG category (Qcomm impact?) -         General Merchandize & Apparel at 22.99% of sales vs 22.96% (No meaningful change?) -         Increased operating expenses on store expansion (Will continue as Co Expands) Brokerages believe this compression in margins could sustain for the long term due to structural changes in the value retail eco-system on account of increased acceptance of the Quick Commerce format and higher competitive intensity there. In May 2024, Neville Noronha had called this out in an interview to me – where calling out the Qcomm impact he said, “There will be significantly more digital before modern trade evolves and matures. Moats of every business no matter how strong; will be slightly weaker than pre-digital times. That could reduce profit pools for retail.” Speaking of Neville Noronha, the surprising factor along with Q3’s result release was Neville’s decision to not renew his contract as MD & CEO which ends on Jan 31, 2026. Neville has been with DMART for over 20 years and is responsible for expanding the company into a 50000 Cr retail behemoth. An unassuming, self-aware, hard-working and extremely focused leader who didn’t shy away from saying things as he saw them to those that matter. He was candid enough to even admit the balls he missed, on rare occasions. His stepping down is the end of an era at DMART.
