Why did we reinvent the Charpy test for automotive steel? As automotive structures integrate more complex combinations of steel grades and thicknesses, traditional tensile tests often fail to reveal true weld performance under crash conditions. At ArcelorMittal Tailored Blanks (AMTB), we needed a faster and more reliable way to validate weld integrity across all configurations. That’s why our Global R&D team adapted the Charpy impact test, widely used for heavy-gauge steels to the needs of laser-welded automotive components. What makes this approach different? ✅ Standardised, rapid assessment of weld ductility for any steel combination. ✅ Key insights into energy absorption and fracture behaviour which is critical for safety. ✅ Validation time reduced by up to 70%, accelerating design cycles. We believe this Charpy-based method can become a new industry standard for validating laser-welded solutions.
