  • Looking back on the Global Entrepreneurship Week, we celebrate perseverance, innovation and collaboration. Hordijk, a family business founded 100 years ago, demonstrates how entrepreneurship and persistence can lead to significant impact. The company is pioneering Wavefoamer technology, which uses less energy and can process more recyclable and organic waste streams. Sustainability has been key for 100 years – we call it stewardship. The breakthrough occurred when the right point of entry was identified at TU Delft. Collaboration with TU Delft and YES!Delft Students accelerated innovation, gave new energy, and sparked fresh ideas, such as defence applications and the use of agricultural waste streams. It broadened the network to markets that would otherwise have been unreachable and made employees proud to showcase their work to others. Innovation through academia takes persistence. Find the right person and don’t give up. Last year's TU Delft Campus Founders Breakfast: Mapiq CEO Sander Schutte shared brutally honest lessons from building his company. ⬇️ 𝗠𝗮𝗽𝗶𝗾 Hybrid working is tough to get right and many companies still struggle. Mapiq tackles these challenges with an AI-powered platform that helps workplace teams and employees seamlessly orchestrate how and where work happens. Sander was, in his own words, “completely willing to talk about his f*ckups”. That openness made for a truly engaging interview, highly appreciated by the founders in the audience. We broke the conversation into five concrete segments. 1️⃣ 𝗢𝗻 𝗛𝗶𝗿𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗧𝗮𝗹𝗲𝗻𝘁 - Sander's lessons:  • At the start, you’re working with a small team of generalists where everyone does and knows everything.  • As you scale, you build teams of specialists (think marketing with an SEO expert, SEA expert, copywriter). This shift introduces complexity and coordination challenges.  • What worked in a small, all-hands environment won’t scale. Invest early in clear roles, structured processes, and communication systems to keep your growing team aligned. 2️⃣ 𝗢𝗻 𝗧𝗲𝗮𝗺 𝗢𝗿𝗴𝗮𝗻𝗶𝘇𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻 - Sander's lessons:  • Much more structure is needed when you grow to more than 50 employees.  • Make sure you invest in Leadership Development and hire experienced managers on time. 3️⃣ 𝗢𝗻 𝗗𝗘𝗜 𝗮𝗻𝗱 𝗖𝘂𝗹𝘁𝘂𝗿𝗲 - Sander told us about the investment he made into learning more about DEI. His takeaways:  • Educate yourself.  • Keep a positive vibe around the topic. "As a founder, my main responsibility lies with the success of the company and growth. DEI is a no brainer for success and of utmost importance. Educate yourself so you work on it from the beginning while creating your company culture." 4️⃣ 𝗢𝗻 𝗜𝗻𝘃𝗲𝘀𝘁𝗶𝗻𝗴 - Sander's lessons:  • An investment deal is like a marriage. Choose your investors wisely.  • Do not pitch your favorite investors first.  • Learn the key metrics investors care about before you start  • Many entrepreneurs see fundraising as a tough period. It helps to view it as free consulting from specialists who’ve seen countless companies up close. That perspective can be hugely educational. 5️⃣ 𝗢𝗻 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗜𝗺𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗮𝗻𝗰𝗲 𝗼𝗳 𝗦𝗮𝗹𝗲𝘀 - What do founders spend too little time on? The short answer: sales. "You need to know about sales. Too few founders with a tech background appreciate sales." -- Thank you Sander for sharing these invaluable lessons so openly with our community. 📍 𝗧𝗵𝗶𝘀 𝗧𝗵𝘂𝗿𝘀𝗱𝗮𝘆, 𝗡𝗼𝘃𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿 𝟮𝟳𝘁𝗵: 𝗝𝗼𝗶𝗻 𝘂𝘀 𝗳𝗼𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗻𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗙𝗼𝘂𝗻𝗱𝗲𝗿𝘀 𝗕𝗿𝗲𝗮𝗸𝗳𝗮𝘀𝘁 with Maxim Segeren, CEO of Tree Composites. We start with breakfast at 08:30am and you're off to the office by 11:00 at the latest, full of inspiration and with new connections. 📸 Photos by Willem de Kam. #FoundersBreakfast #Mapiq #TUDelftCampus

A safe, sustainable battery based on aluminium, TU alumnus Michiel Kruijff is developing them with his start-up ZemQuest b.v.
