We recently partnered with Concord Visa to host The People Playbook for Going Global, bringing together four world-class leaders who've mastered the art of scaling teams globally. Hamish McKenzie (Substack), Christine van Hoffen (Tracksuit), and Jamie Beaton (Crimson Education) joined Tim Brown (Allbirds & Icehouse Ventures) to share their hard-won lessons on building culture, hiring strategically, and leading teams across time zones. Here are a few key takeaways from the evening: ➡️ Hire for cultural quirks, not just hard skills. As Hamish noted, instead of asking 'What are your strengths and weaknesses,' test how candidates adapt and react in unexpected situations (hello, banter!). ➡️ Culture needs to be intentional, especially as you scale. As your team grows, it’s important to introduce deliberate systems that support an evolving and adapting culture. ➡️ High care and high performance aren’t mutually exclusive – you can have a culture with both. The strongest teams support each other while delivering exceptional results. ➡️ Be loud and proud about your company values during the hiring process. If you set the expectation up front, the right people will run towards you, and those who aren’t aligned will move on. Congratulations to Sonya Williams, Brooke Roberts, Leighton Roberts and the wider Sharesies founding team for receiving the Ray Thomson Award, recognising entrepreneurs who demonstrate integrity, proactivity, and entrepreneurial energy. Presented annually at our Showcase, this award honours founders who exemplify the values that drive New Zealand's startup ecosystem. The late Dr Ray Thomson was an early champion of our angel investor community, backing early-stage companies and founders passionately, supporting other investors on their journey, and conceiving the idea for the original Showcase in 2011. Since founding Sharesies in 2017, the team has built one of New Zealand's fastest-growing startups, scaling to over 200 employees across multiple global offices. Their mission to "create the most financially empowered generation" has resonated – over 750,000 Kiwis now invest through their platform. Beyond their business success, the Sharesies founders have contributed significantly to the wider startup ecosystem, supporting, mentoring and advising emerging entrepreneurs. As Leighton reflected in his acceptance speech, “It’s been a crazy eight years. The team is not just the people at work at Sharesies, it’s the ecosystem and within that, everyone in this room that supports businesses, good attitudes, optimism and a prosperous future. We really love being a part of this community, and are so excited for the future.”

Congratulations to James He and the Artificial Societies team on their $USD 5.3M seed funding round. 👏 Artificial Societies is an AI-powered audience simulation platform that helps organisations test content and ideas with their target audiences. Drawing from a database of over one million personas, the platform simulates how different groups might react to content, products, and campaigns, delivering insights in minutes rather than months. One example is their "Reach" feature, where anyone can simulate their own LinkedIn audience and test how their posts will perform before posting for real. A huge congratulations to Dave Ferguson, Jiajun Zhu, and the Nuro team on their US$203M Series E funding round! Nuro is building an AI-first autonomous driving system that has already been proven on public roads with over 1.4 million autonomous miles and zero at-fault incidents. The tech is vehicle-agnostic and designed to scale. This allows automakers and mobility providers to license the technology for everything from robotaxis to personal vehicles, including their partnership with Uber and Lucid Motors to deploy 20,000+ autonomous Lucid vehicles starting in 2026. Founded by former Waymo engineers, including Kiwi Dave Ferguson, Nuro started with autonomous delivery vehicles and has evolved into a comprehensive autonomy platform. Their technology is already operating driverlessly across three US states, making it one of the few autonomous systems actually deployed on public roads today. With this funding, Nuro is focused on scaling their AI-first technology and expanding commercial partnerships to make autonomous driving accessible to all. Congrats to Nandoun Abeysekera and the AVASA team on their $4.75M pre-Series A round! Avasa is developing an arterial coupler that could transform microsurgery, enabling surgeons to connect micro arteries and veins 80% faster than current manual suturing methods. After seven years of development, they've reached design freeze and completed pre-clinical studies with 100% success rates. The technology addresses a need in microsurgery where traditional hand-suturing techniques are time-consuming and technically demanding. Their device has achieved the precision required for microvascular connections, working at 20-micron tolerances. Founded by plastic surgeon Nandoun Abeysekera while working at Auckland's Middlemore Hospital, the company is now preparing for FDA clearance by Q4 2026. The funding will support formal compliance testing and taking the product through regulatory approval. Congrats to the team at Aether on their launch and the announcement of their $3.8m seed round! Launched at our 15th Annual Showcase and spun out of New + Improved Ventures, Aether is a strategic marketing platform that helps teams unlock the knowledge buried in their organisation's research, data, and reports. Led by Carsten Grueber (ex-TikTok, Facebook and Google, now CEO and Co-Founder), Aether has already signed 18 clients including Kiwibank and Edgewell Personal Care, hit $600k ARR, and secured a seven-figure deal with a global FMCG company - solving the problem that marketing teams spend up to 40% of their time recreating presentations instead of actually marketing. "Aether is aimed at making it easier for staff (including non-marketing staff) to access source materials, then easily turn them into a presentation. AI allows us to not only make faster, on-brand, well-formatted documents and presentations, but it also means the millions of dollars of research, strategy and proprietary data like sales, customer or market data to be brought to bear on every piece of work, in a way no human ever could," said Simon Pound, Co-Founder of New + Improved Ventures and Aether. Last Thursday marked our 15th Annual Showcase, where nine Kiwi founders presented to over 1,500 investors gathered at Auckland’s Spark Arena and nine locations throughout Aotearoa. 👏 The evening kicked off with pre-drinks in collaboration with Pie Funds, featuring a chat with Nuro Co-Founder Dave Ferguson, and an economic update from ANZ Chief Economist, Sharon Zollner. This was followed by a seated dinner with performances from two up-and-coming Kiwi singers – Nikau Grace & Te Ohorere Williams, an opening message from Kami Co-Founder, Alliv Samson, cuisine crafted by Kiwi chef Ben Bayly, and a collaboration with Kiwi artist Dick Frizzell (more to come on that later this week)! The real stars were the founders who took the stage: ▪️ Carsten Grueber from Aether - helping marketing teams create better, faster presentations using their organisation's files and data. Aether made their public launch at Showcase! ▪️ Mark Chadderton from Aspiring Materials - producing high-purity, carbon-free alternatives to essential industrial materials from abundant olivine rocks. ▪️ Grant de Leeuw from DataMasque - keeping sensitive data safe by replacing it with synthetically identical data for AI/ML operations without privacy risk. ▪️ Stefan Powell from Dawn Aerospace - pioneering scalable and sustainable space access with 60+ test flights completed for their Aurora spaceplane. ▪️ James Sampson from FileInvite - eliminating document collection chaos with secure, automated workflows that replace endless email chains. ▪️ Dr. Will Barker from Liberate by Mint Innovation - recovering cobalt, nickel and lithium from the back mass within end-of-life lithium-ion batteries. ▪️ Laura Domigan from Opo Bio - New Zealand's first cultivated meat company supplying high-quality cell lines to enable large-scale production of lab-grown meat. ▪️ Levi Fawcett from Partly - building the first foundational AI model for the auto parts industry to keep vehicles on the road longer. ▪️ Sonya Williams from Sharesies - wealth development platform with 800,000+ investors across Australasia, reshaping how people build and share wealth. A big thank you to these founders for showing us how bright Aotearoa's future is, and to all the investors who came to back them.
