🚨 Alert: New Test Rig Underway! Delighted to share that we are in the final steps preparing for the installation of the first-ever research engine at Cranfield University. This ground-breaking engine offers real-time compression ratio control, multi-fuel capability, and a customer-configurable combustion system, marking a significant milestone for Project MINIMAL (Minimum Environmental Impact ultra-efficient cores for Aircraft Propulsion). This state-of-the-art OpenFPE engine, supplied by Libertine FPE, is an Opposed Free Piston engine that will be fuelled by hydrogen and tested under novel combustion modes, such as Homogeneous Charge Compression Ignition (HCCI), among others. Its pistons drive linear alternators to generate electric power, forming the base unit of the Composite Cycle Engine (CCE) core. The engine and the associated hardware have already arrived at Cranfield, and the drive & toolchain knowledge transfer from Libertine FPE has been successfully completed. ⚙️ How can 𝘄𝗮𝘀𝘁𝗲 𝗵𝗲𝗮𝘁 from a #PEMfuelcell be used to 𝘀𝘂𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁 𝘁𝗵𝗿𝘂𝘀𝘁 generation in aviation? That’s one of the questions EXFAN addressed during Aerodays 2025 in Warsaw, Poland 🇵🇱 (7–9 May). As part of the #ClimAVTechCluster session 🌍, 𝟳 𝗛𝗼𝗿𝗶𝘇𝗼𝗻 𝗘𝘂𝗿𝗼𝗽𝗲 𝗽𝗿𝗼𝗷𝗲𝗰𝘁𝘀 came together to share insights on advanced propulsion concepts for the future of aviation ✈️. In case you missed it, here's what happened yesterday at Aerodays 2025! Aviation is a European success story of global technological leadership. But we cannot take it for granted! Countries in other world regions are investing heavily in the sector, and #decarbonisation, #digitisation and a changing geopolitical context are posing important challenges. 🤔 How can we address this? ➡️ That is exactly what #ARIS aims to do, the European Aviation Research and Innovation Strategy: Research institutes, universities, startups, and big players in the sector have joined forces to draw up the strategy, supported by the European Commission’s DG RTD and DG MOVE and facilitated by Clean Aviation and SESAR Joint Undertaking. Our Executive Directors Axel Krein and Andreas Boschen gave a sneak preview of the strategy at the #Aerodays2025 in Warsaw. 🎯 The message was clear: for #sustainability in #aviation, for #growth, #competitiveness and strategic #autonomy, we need #EU investment and a European framework.
