Together with the Turku NLP research group, from the Turun yliopisto - University of Turku, we are releasing Poro 2, a high-performing Finnish language model. The model was trained using a continued pretraining approach that allows you to efficiently add new language capabilities to existing models. This approach requires less computational resources than training from scratch and preserves the model's original capabilities while effectively transferring knowledge to a new target language. This release includes: • Two production-ready Finnish language models (8B and 70B parameters) • Complete source code for model adaptation • Detailed data preparation workflows with accompanying datasets • Comprehensive technical documentation We're sharing our comprehensive methodology to help organizations worldwide adapt powerful language models for their native languages using AMD Instinct hardware. Language diversity remains a significant challenge in AI development globally. Our continued pretraining approach, tested with AMD Instinct™ MI250X on the LUMI supercomputer, provides an accessible blueprint for countries to develop domestic AI capabilities that support linguistic sovereignty.
