Ever heard the term 'aquanaut'? Kirk Krack, Human Performance Dive Lead at DEEP, explains what it means to be an aquanaut and what excites him most about Vanguard, our pilot subsea human habitat 🤿 Underwater footage credit: Hope Ginsburg #DEEP #OceanExploration #Aquanaut
About us
DEEP is an international research and development organisation engineering new technologies which will improve understanding and preservation of the planet’s deep water environments. Our mission is to imagine and invent amazing things that empower our species to sustainably explore, live, work, and thrive underwater. By changing the way humans can interact with the oceans, we will revolutionise humanity’s ability to understand and protect them. Over 80% of our planet’s oceans remain almost completely unknown, unobserved, and unexplored. Yet marine ecosystems hold undiscovered solutions to many of the greatest problems facing humanity - including climate change, biodiversity loss and human health. DEEP is an expert team of highly experienced engineers, operations, and safety experts. We will drive progress in deep sea innovation and discovery in order to become stewards of the oceans and reshape our relationship with our planet.

A subsea human habitat is a marvel of engineering. But a habitat doesn't operate itself. It's time to meet Roger Garcia, Director of Habitat Operations, and Thomas Potts, Associate Director of Habitat Operations. They have 33 years' combined experience with underwater habitat programs and they've joined DEEP to shape the next generation of undersea habitation. We get asked a lot of questions about living underwater. One question in particular keeps coming up. "How does a toilet work underwater?" In recognition of World Toilet Day yesterday, here's how number ones and number twos will work for the crew on Vanguard, DEEP's pilot subsea human habitat. #DEEP #WorldToiletDay #Vanguard

It covers most of Earth's surface, regulates the global climate, and generates half the oxygen we breathe. But how much of the ocean has been explored? Here's why it's challenging to explore the ocean and the ways humans can access it. #DEEP #OceanExploration

Sharing a magical moment from one of Phil S.'s most memorable dives 🤿 As part of a project to locate the WWII shipwreck of Karlsruhe, Phil and his diving partners descended from a Diving Support Vessel (DSV) to 95 meters deep in the Baltic Sea. Here’s Phil at the bow cutting away a trawl net to reveal the brass letters of the ship’s name to positively identify the wreck. 40 minutes at the wreck in 4 degrees Celsius required 3.5 hours of in-water decompression. #DEEP #OceanExploration #Karlsruhe #WWII

Today, we honor the bravery, courage, and dedication of veterans who have served the United States and the United Kingdom. At DEEP, we’re proud to have several veterans on our team whose service and commitment continue to inspire us. - Roger Garcia served in the U.S. Navy as a diver and combat medic in support of U.S. Marines for 21 years. - In Roger’s team, Jose Arbelaez also served in the U.S. Navy as a diver. - Over at DEEP Campus in the UK, Tom Hutton, Mark Hamilton, and Karl Gilmore all served in the British Army. - Paul Nelson and Seb Coulthard FRGS served in the Royal Navy. We thank you all for your service and for the values you bring to DEEP. #VeteransDay #RemembranceDay
