Time for hope: Preparing for 2026 In recent weeks, I’ve been in many conversations with funders, organisations and communities across the migration sector and beyond. Everywhere, there is a shared recognition that the far-right is an existential threat to all of us. This shared understanding gives us a foundation to build a collective vision for the kind of country we want the UK to be. Those of us working on migration issues in the UK today need hope, clarity, collaboration and courage more than ever. Now is the moment to prepare - together - for the possibilities 2026 may bring. That’s why we Migration Exchange (MEX) are very much looking forward to our online event on 10 December will bring together organisations and funders from across the UK to explore how to build a fairer system in a year shaped by elections, hostility and increasing pressure on our communities. In the revised Environmental Improvement Plan, the Government has sidestepped its obligations and flunked defining a firm plan to deliver legislation to end peat sales. While its commitment to end peat sales in the revised Environmental Improvement Plan is welcome, the phrase ‘when Parliamentary time allows’ just lets the can be kicked further down the road – conditional commitment ends up being commitment without action. It takes us no further forward than the broken pledge to ban peat made by the previous Conservative government. After years of painstaking discussions, research, trials and hard work within the horticultural industry we expected more than this vague promise of maybe-one-day indifference. We want and need delivery, to restore business certainty to a horticulture industry that’s been left in limbo for too long: 🌱 Growers are calling for government to deliver on a 2030 ban. 💬 MPs from across the political spectrum have spoken out in support. 👀 Governments in Wales, Scotland and Northern Ireland are looking to the UK Government for leadership. 📢 Hundreds of ordinary people have already signed our recently-launched petition for legislation in 2026 – an action which wouldn’t have been necessary had the government been more decisive. What more is it going to take for the Government to just get on with it and legislate to end peat sales now? We expect to see this included in the spring 2026 King’s Speech with legislation in the next parliamentary session to back British horticulture and move towards a peat-free future. The Environmental Improvement Plan is out🎉 We took the Government to court over the last version. This time, the test is simple: will it truly deliver for nature? There are welcome improvements, including clearer delivery plans, new action on toxic PFAS chemicals, tougher measures on waste crime and a target to expand wildlife-rich habitats by 2030. These steps matter because they give the public a basis to hold Government to account. However, the absence of clear action on the marine environment is deeply concerning, with Marine Protected Areas and Good Environmental Status already off track. A new, focused EIP is positive – but there must be no further drift, delay, or dilution.
