Ukrspecsystems: how Freeport East supports major inward investments in the East of England East Anglia's defence and airfield heritage and specialist technical expertise provided the ideal environment for the £200m investment in Suffolk by Ukraine-based defence company UKRSPECSYSTEMS. As set out in our latest case study, Freeport East worked over several months to secure this exciting new investment. Freeport East’s range of investment incentives and wider expertise are now well positioned to support continued growth of the company and in the related defence and technology supply chains. 📢The announcement was made at this year's DSEI UK conference in London and marked the first major investment by a Ukrainian defence company in the UK. 📰Defence Secretary John Healey MP highlighted Ukrspecsystems as a key driver of growth in East Anglia, and the close alignment with the industry priorities outlined in the 2025 UK Defence Industrial Strategy. 🏭Specialising in unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) the investment will create around 500 jobs at a 11,000m2 factory at Mildenhall and testing and training centre in Elmsett. 🧑🏭A key opportunity arising from the investment is the safeguarding and development of high-level electronics and engineering skills in the region, many of which have been impacted by recent consolidation and takeovers. The investment will support the evolution of advanced manufacturing expertise while also creating new areas of growth. 🎉The latest edition of our solar campaign, From the Rooftops is now live. In issue 4 read about how our campaign on solar aligns with the work of one of our founding partners Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils and we cover one of the exciting new areas of deployment – floating solar and its role in supporting East Anglian agriculture… Hear from Mid Suffolk District Council leader Andrew Mellen who sets out his authority's "rooftops before rural" principle and details the impressive range of solar initiatives councils are delivering across Babergh and Mid Suffolk. Mid Suffolk District Council who wholly own Gateway 14, Stowmarket, is developing the Gateway 14 innovation and logistics park on the outskirts of Stowmarket, and is a part of the Freeport East site. All units, including the 1.17 million sq ft distribution centre for The Range, boast either BREEAM excellent or good ratings, including smart energy systems, rainwater harvesting and solar PV arrays. Mid Suffolk's new £18m Stowmarket Innovation Gateway on the site will incorporate a biosolar roof system, with green roofing and solar PV panels. Essex County Council, Suffolk County Council, Tendring District Council, Babergh and Mid Suffolk District Councils, East Suffolk Council, Port of Felixstowe / Port of Britain, Gateway 14, Stowmarket, Hutchison Ports (UK), University of Essex, Lesley Wagland, Ivan Henderson, Robert Singh, Sir Christopher Haworth Bt, Andrew Mellen, Jack Abbott, Solar Energy UK, UK Warehousing Association, REA, Global Solar Council (GSC)
In this issue of From the Rooftops, we're looking beyond rooftops to explore how solar technology is finding innovative applications in our region. We visit Suffolk Fresh's pioneering nursery in Bramford, where 1,250 solar panels are being installed not on a roof, but floating on water – a cutting-edge solution that will power one of the UK's most advanced agricultural facilities. We're also joined by Mid Suffolk District Council leader Andy Mellen, who sets out his authority's "rooftops before rural" principle and details the range of solar initiatives councils are delivering across Babergh and Mid Suffolk. From leisure centres to village halls, and from business support schemes to upcoming installations at 32 secondary schools, it's a comprehensive look at how local government is driving the solar revolution in Suffolk. Delivered in partnership with Freeport East.
