🔍When retail hit terminal velocity: Fujitsu’s 1982 POS design In an era of arcade machines, Rubik’s Cubes, and booming personal computers, Fujitsu’s 1982 point of sale (POS) terminal brought the future to the shop floor. Before this, retailers relied on bulky mechanical tills and manual record-keeping slower, less reliable, and prone to errors. Fujitsu’s design stood out for its compact, integrated layout, combining transaction processing with basic data handling in one sleek unit. The result? Quicker, more reliable checkouts that improved life for both shoppers and staff. The design was officially registered in the UK by HLK on 22 June 1982, and while it eventually lapsed in 1997, it had a profound influence on modern retail. By replacing the mechanical cash register with an electronic hub, it paved the way for barcode scanning, electronic payments, and the sophisticated systems we now take for granted in every supermarket and high street store. Much like the early computers and gadgets of the 1980s, this POS terminal was a symbol of the decade’s drive for efficiency, convenience, and helped transform the way we shop. #IPFiles #HLK175 #Innovation
