Testing kits for things like pregnancy are often used for a fleeting moment and then discarded. But they use a heck of a lot of plastic for something so disposable, and they’re not necessarily easy for consumers to use. Looking to solve these twin problems with a fresh approach is Hoopsy. The London-based startup wants to provide test providers with a sustainable, 100% plastic-free, alternative to traditional plastic tests, while giving consumers a more user-friendly experience. “When you're taking a pregnancy test, you get two lines if it's positive, but the second line can be really, really faint, and when you're taking a test, there's a lot of hope and nervousness around it,” explains Hoopsy founder Lara Solomon. “We found through research that 65% of women struggle to interpret the lines on the test, and they just want to be told what the result is.” And so Hoopsy tests are accompanied by a mobile app that makes sense of the result and guides the user through the next steps in their journey. Though based in the UK, Hoopsy plans to launch its 100% plastic-free test first into the huge US market. Link in the comments to read the full story!

Outcomes not activities Today at Austin Tech Week I listened to Gordon Daugherty talk fundraising. Wasn’t sure I’d pick up any tips, as I’ve been to a lot of talks on this, but this really resonated with me. Investors when asking what you are raising for don’t want to hear I’m hiring x or y people, paying for clinical testing or whatever. They want to hear what you are achieving with the money. That ask slide instead of what we’re spending the cash on, tell them what that money will achieve. Hoopsy is raising $1.5m to get our plastic-free pregnancy test to market in the USA, so that we can start eliminating plastic from the environment. What are you trying to achieve with your fundraise? I’m off to fix up my ask slide instead :) #austintechweek #fundraising #outcomes

We asked 500 women about their emotions when taking a pregnancy test... A mixture of UK and USA women, and as you can see here the biggest emotion experienced was nervousness (83.9%), you might be reading this thinking well duh! Yes, but for those in the room who haven't taken a pregnancy test (men I am looking at you), you might not be aware of what is going through a women's head at that moment. In my pitch I talk about when taking and reading a pregnancy test women are not in their usual rational mindset. I don't know how much this sinks in when I say it, hence why we did this research. THIS IS A REAL PROBLEM! The challenge with women feeling nervous when taking a test is that it creates high psychological stress and results in a lack of confidence in reading their result. Hopefully this helps you understand why a pregnancy test is not the same type of purchase as other products - I don't think that women experience nervousness, hopefulness, anxiousness all at once with many other products... but correct me if I am wrong :) This research was carried out for me by my fabulous intern Anjali Negi #pregnancytest #womenshealth #marketresearch

  • Last week the Making Good Exhibition at the National Gallery of Victoria opened.... Excitingly Hoopsy was included because the exhibition was all about redesigning the everyday. It is great that museums and thought leaders are recognizing the importance of everyday items in our war on waste and climate change. Love it!
