While our core mission is Science for a Safer World, our colleagues are always finding ways to make a difference at a local level too. With the introduction of our new volunteering policy in January, over 1200 hours of time has been volunteered by colleagues from 23 of our global sites. Given it's International Volunteer Day today, we felt it was only right to showcase some of the brilliant ways our colleagues have given their time back to their communities: 1️⃣ Conserving wildlife and the environment - from plant inventorying and clean-up days to river water testing and even the deployment of a manufactured oyster reef! 2️⃣ Engaging young scientists – colleagues have given talks, run science demonstrations and even coached a robotics team. 3️⃣ Combatting hunger and homelessness – teams have supported the redistribution of surplus food to foodbanks, helped build affordable housing and created care packages. 4️⃣ Fundraising – aside from our whole company fundraisers for Save The Children, from new school gym equipment to Alzheimer’s research and London’s Air Ambulance Service, colleagues have raised money for some great causes. 5️⃣ Lending our professional skills – through community centre IT and tech support, charity trusteeship, patient ambassadorship, e-mentorship and talks on professional development. #ScienceForASaferWorld #Volunteering #LGCProtects

🎶 "On the second day of Christmas, my true love sent to me… two turtle(dove)s dodging microplastics." 🎶 Our LGC Standards article, 'Microplastics, Macro Problem', shows how tiny plastic particles are now found everywhere, not just in sea turtles, but also on the ocean floor and in the fish we eat. Strong testing and trusted materials are essential if we are to understand and tackle the problem. That is why LGC Standards has created certified microplastic reference materials, covering polymers like polyethylene, polypropylene, nylon and PET. These tools help laboratories detect microplastics more accurately and support global efforts to monitor and reduce pollution. 🎶 “On the first day of Christmas, my true love sent to me… a partridge in a pear-fectly firm tree.” 🎶 A recent study on Asian pears uncovered a small DNA variation that helps some fruit stay firmer for longer. Firmer pears travel better, bruise less, ultimately reducing waste: a win for growers, retailers, and consumers. To turn this insight into action, the team partnered with LGC Biosearch Technologies to develop a KASP genotyping assay. This test quickly identifies seedlings carrying the “firmer fruit” variant, helping breeders select the best plants without waiting years for trees to mature. It’s a “pear-fect” example of LGC turning discovery into real-world impact, supporting food quality, sustainability, and innovation. Chromium VI exposure: How LGC is helping achieve effective regulation Chromium is a versatile substance used in stainless steel, leather, plastics, pigments and dyes. But not all chromium is the same: while Chromium III is considered safe and even used in some dietary supplements, Chromium VI is highly toxic and carcinogenic, with strict regulations in place to limit exposure. Testing exposure to Chromium VI through inhalation of air, fumes and aerosols requires validated protocols for careful sample preparation and analysis. One challenge is that Chromium III and Chromium VI can easily convert into one another during testing, highlighting the need for robust quality controls. John Entwisle and colleagues at the UK National Measurement Laboratory (NML) at LGC used a technique called chromium speciation methodology, which separates and measures the different forms of chromium, to characterise a quartz fibre material (representing air monitoring filters). Their work confirmed its potential as a quality control material for trapped chromium, ensuring more reliable monitoring. This type of work is invaluable for future risk assessments and, most importantly, for protecting people from hazardous Chromium VI exposure. #ScienceForASaferWorld #LGCProtects
