I was thrilled to help launch the Oxford Children's Word of the Year for 2025 today at a school in Cornwall in conjunction with the National Literacy Trust. Oxford University Press spoke to over 5000 kids to pick the children's word of the year for last year which was... PEACE. It is a powerful reminder of how attuned children are to the world around them and gives me so much hope for the future. The slang word chosen was six-seven which all the kids in my assembly LOVED! Afterwards I shared my book How to Make a Story illustrated by Ana Gomez, followed by a story making workshop and a Q&A. The words we choose to use tell a story, they have power and the Oxford Children's Word of the Year is a great reminder of this. BBC News Southwest came to the assembly and it should be on TV tonight.

We are excited to announce the Oxford Children’s Word of the Year 2025 is PEACE! 🕊️ Research carried out by the Children's team at Oxford University Press, which surveyed almost 5,000 children aged 6-14 across the UK, highlights that children are calling for peace in response to world conflicts. Over one third of children chose peace, followed by AI and resilience. Almost half of the children surveyed chose SIX-SEVEN as their Slang Word of the Year, followed by aura and delulu. Our research revealed the use of six-seven fosters inclusivity and social currency with children stating it was important to have words they only use with friends. Andrea Quincey, Director of Early Years and Primary Publishing at OUP, said: “A key theme we see from our Oxford Children’s Word of the Year research is just how attuned children are to current affairs. This year is no different; whether that’s calling for peace in response to current conflicts or highlighting how AI has permeated daily life. Perhaps it’s no surprise that ‘six-seven’ is voted, overwhelmingly, as their slang word of the year. A word which brings them laughter and joy and connection with friends. After more than a decade as the General Editor of the Oxford Dictionary of National Biography, Sir David Cannadine will be stepping down on 31 July 2026. He will be succeeded by Professor William Whyte, who brings to the role a long and intimate knowledge of the Dictionary as an author, adviser, and member of the academic advisory board, alongside his expertise in British history and heritage matters. Professor Whyte says, ‘‘It is the honour of my life to be asked to serve as General Editor of the ODNB. The Oxford Revise team recently partnered with experts from Shakespeare's Globe to bring Shakespeare to life for GCSE students. 🎭 11 schools across England hosted dynamic, performance-based GCSE revision workshops, designed to boost student confidence in their English Literature course.
