Much has been made of Sarah Staudinger’s proximity to celebrity. The STAUD founder is a well-connected Los Angeles native. Her husband is Hollywood superagent Ari Emanuel, the chief executive of Endeavor. Larry David officiated their wedding, and Cher is her godmother. It’s the sort of background that can prompt eye rolls, if not outright scorn, in the industry: a privileged young woman (she was 26 years old when she launched her brand in 2015) with an eponymous fashion label. “I hate that narrative,” she told The Business of Fashion, before softening her tone. “It doesn’t make the brand, and I’ve made a very concerted effort from day one to not put myself before the product.” After nearly 10 years, Staudinger has certainly proved that Staud is more than a pet project. If in the early years the brand was primarily known for its bags, ubiquitous on the arms of Selena Gomez, Bella Hadid and other “it” girls, much of Staud’s success today comes from its ability to do multiple things well. Revenue is drawn equally from apparel, accessories and footwear, and the brand continually produces hits in each. Sales are soon expected to cross $250 million annually, growing 30 percent from last year and sixfold over the past five years. In the coming weeks, West Africa’s Ghana and Nigeria will erupt into celebration as “Detty December” kicks off. The region will see tourism levels spike as many dual-nationals and diasporans return to the continent in time for the season, which lasts from mid-December to mid-January and spans daily events from beach parties that last until sunrise to music festivals featuring international artists. The festivities span far and wide, reaching Côte d’Ivoire, Kenya and South Africa. This season, a similar set of events will unfold, as a wave of big and small global beauty labels — like YSL Beauty from France, Danessa Myricks Beauty from the US and SLIQ from the UK — will travel to West Africa to hold marketing events, while local beauty brands offer up retail spaces, hold joint marketing activations and share client lists. An early mover was US skincare label Topicals. Back in December 2023, the indie skincare brand founded by Olamide Olowe took a handful of influencers on a press trip to Accra, Ghana’s capital, to experience Detty December. The marketing activation, which featured a mix of club nights, music festivals and sightseeing around the city, sent the internet into a frenzy; Olowe said the trip helped the brand’s signature eye mask maintain its place as the number one eye product at Sephora for the last 18 months. It offered a much-welcome twist on influencer trips, whilst also placing culture and community at the centre of its marketing strategy. While tourists and African consumers get to interact with some of their favourite international brands on home soil, a long-term distribution model is needed to boost sales beyond the festive period. Ads for Nike, Superdry and Lacoste have been banned in the UK for misleading consumers about the environmental sustainability credentials of their products. The Advertising Standards Authority (ASA) said paid-for Google ads run by all three retailers used terms such as “sustainable”, “sustainable materials” or “sustainable style” without providing evidence proving the green claims. Hermès heir Nicolas Puech has sued Bernard Arnault and his LVMH luxury conglomerate, among other parties, in a civil case related to Puech’s claim that he was deprived of Hermès shares now worth billions of euros, according to a filing of his lawsuit reviewed by Reuters. The lawsuit marks the first known legal challenge by Puech, 82, against Arnault and LVMH, and comes more than a decade after LVMH stunned France’s business establishment by quietly amassing a 23 percent stake in Hermès, triggering one of the most bitter corporate battles in French stock market history.
