What is grounding in AI - for dummies! I've seen a lot of people talk about grounding and RAG in AI and then follow it up with a load of technobabble that they clearly don't understand themselves. In simple terms, grounding converts a prompt into one or more traditional search queries then scrapes the results in Bing/Google. So for example, the following prompt: "I'm running a 10k at the weekend and still want to look fabulous. Can you recommend a foundation which won't run?" Becomes "best long lasting foundation waterproof running 2025" or "foundation won't run for running makeup". Understanding how grounding queries are created can improve your understanding of how LLMs generate their answers as well as informing what you need to do to get yourself seen. But how do you find out what the grounding queries are? In ChatGPT, follow these steps: Step 1: Open Chrome Dev Tools (F12) Step 2: With Chrome Dev Tools open, send your prompt (make sure it requires a search and doesn't just use pre-trained data) Step 3: Under Network, click the Fetch/XHR button and search for a script called "conversation". Click on it to open and select the Response tab. Step 4: The easiest way to do this is to copy the JSON you can see into a text editor. You can then search the text for instances of "q" (with the speech marks). This will show you the grounding queries. I'm working on a solution to make these steps a lot easier/quicker so watch this space.

It’s very easy for Google ads agencies to just take the low-hanging fruit Target warm customers, get a high ROAS and look good in their client reports But that doesn’t fuel growth They’re just targeting people who already know your brand and were likely going to convert anyway If you want to scale on Google - you have to be targeting cold traffic who have no idea who you are, and converting them into paying customers Your ROAS will drop, sure - but at the end of the day it’s about growing the the total profit your brand brings in every month, not just maintaining a good net profit %

I’ve seen a lot of posts this week sharing the new Ahrefs research on what correlates with brand visibility in Google’s AI Overviews. It’s a useful snapshot. Ahrefs analysed around 75,000 brands and found the strongest correlations were: 1) Branded web mentions 2) Branded anchors 3) Branded search volume 4) Domain Rating and referring domains 5) Branded traffic and backlink count It’s interesting data and reinforces the direction Google has been moving in for some time. Brand signals are clearly playing a growing role in how content is surfaced in AI search. That said, it’s worth adding a bit of context. The research doesn’t take into account things like: • On-page content quality • Technical SEO • Content structure and formatting • How well a page actually matches user intent So while the correlation is helpful to see, it’s not the full picture. What’s being measured here is brand prominence, not necessarily content execution. Both matter, but they’re not being evaluated side by side in this analysis. Still, it’s one of the first meaningful datasets we’ve seen on AI Overviews and well worth the conversation it’s sparked.
