Most small businesses don’t need complicated HR systems - they just need a few things done consistently. Here are three simple tweaks that make a huge difference to how teams run day to day: ✅ Track absence and timekeeping properly – not just who’s off, but why, and when. I recently worked with a business where there’d been ongoing issues with lateness. When things came to a head, there was no clear process or paper trail, and that made it difficult to show the employee had been treated fairly. A simple system for recording absences and timekeeping (even just notes spreadsheet or Word doc) would’ve made that conversation much easier. ✅Document informal conversations – when you have a quick chat about performance, attendance or attitude, follow up with a short summary by email. It doesn’t need to be formal, but it gives clarity, avoids misunderstandings, and protects both sides if things don’t improve. ✅ Hold return-to-work meetings – they take five minutes, but they’re one of the most effective tools for reducing future absence. I’ve seen the difference when managers make time to ask how someone’s really doing after being off. It builds trust, spots early signs of stress, and can just as easily highlight when there’s a pattern that needs a firmer conversation. None of these take much time, but they show your people that you care and that you’re paying attention. HR doesn’t have to be complex - it just has to be consistent. 🗳️House of Lords Rejects Day-One Worker Rights: a small win for small businesses? Last week, the House of Lords voted 304 to 160 in favour of an amendment to the Employment Rights Bill that removes the proposed “day-one” unfair dismissal protections for workers. Instead, the Lords backed a six-month qualifying period, a significant shift from Labour’s original pledge to grant these rights from the first day of employment. This vote has sparked intense debate across HR, legal, and business communities with everyone discussing the pro and cons. Supporters of the amendment argue that it strikes a better balance especially for smaller businesess who may have felt the pinch this year already with the Labour governments NI hike as the amendment means earlier protection than the current two-year threshold, while still giving employers a window to assess new hires without immediate legal risk. Critics, however, warn that it undermines Labour’s manifesto commitment and could delay meaningful protections for vulnerable workers. 💼 Why It Matters: • Employers may breathe a sigh of relief, avoiding a surge in tribunal claims during probation periods. • Workers will still gain protections sooner than before, but not on day one. • The Bill will now return to the Commons, where MPs could reinstate the original day-one rights, setting up a legislative tug-of-war between the two, meaning all the while the professionals will be in limbo. 🔍 What’s your take? As an HR Advisor, a big part of my role is guiding managers through the dismissal appeals process, helping them ensure a fair and balanced review when an employee challenges a decision. But there are also times when I’m the one reviewing an appeal, especially in complex or sensitive cases. It’s a responsibility I take seriously, as it can shape outcomes not only for individuals but for the organisation’s culture and reputation. Here’s what a fair and thorough appeal process involves for me: Reviewing the full investigation: I revisit the original documentation, witness statements, disciplinary notes, and the rationale behind the decision, to ensure nothing has been overlooked or misinterpreted. Assessing procedural fairness: Was the disciplinary process followed correctly? Were the employee’s rights respected at each stage? Looking for new evidence: Sometimes, appeals bring forward new information or highlight gaps in the original process that deserve a second look. Keeping objectivity at the core: Whether advising or reviewing, fairness and impartiality are non-negotiable. My role is to challenge assumptions, ask the right questions, and ensure the appeal is genuinely reconsidered. Appeals are not just a formality, they are a chance to correct errors, restore trust, and reinforce the values of transparency and accountability.

HR friends, if you’ve ever felt like the unsung hero of the workplace - this one's for you. . . I had an absolute blast joining the fabulous Michelle Hartley FCIPD on the YuLife HR Morning Boost for a session titled: "From Afterthought to Applause: HR Gets Its Recognition" We talked truth. We laughed. And we got very real about what it takes for HR to get the recognition it (we) so deeply deserves. Here are three takeaways that are worth thinking about - and while they might seem obvious at first, I can’t help but wonder how many of us are actually putting them into practice. 1. Document it - You're doing great work. But if you’re not tracking it, writing it down, how can you expect others to see it? Pause. Reflect. Capture the wins. 2. Talk about it – Get out of stealth mode. Share your impact with your boss, execs, whoever needs to hear it. Don’t let your value be the best-kept secret in the business. 3. Say what you want - Recognition means different things to different people. Whether it’s public praise, a recovery day, or a Michelle Hartley-style gift (yes, please!) - speak up and spell it out. Because HR deserves more than a seat at the table. We deserve a standing ovation! #recognition #appreciation
