🎤 It’s been a while since I’ve been behind the mic. Joanna Denman and I are spreading the word about ocular melanoma – a rare form of eye cancer. And we were so pleased to be invited onto BBC Radio 4’s Woman’s Hour to talk about our experiences. It’s a platform and programme we both admire and the presenter Krupa Padhy handled our story with sensitivity and compassion. Far from scaremongering, we talked about the power of friendship. We hope our tale is uplifting and helpful for others going through hard times, despite the c-word context. 𝗟𝗲𝗮𝗿𝗻𝗶𝗻𝗴𝘀 𝗳𝗿𝗼𝗺 𝗯𝗲𝗶𝗻𝗴 𝗯𝗮𝗰𝗸 𝗶𝗻 𝗮 𝘀𝘁𝘂𝗱𝗶𝗼: · Your heart will always be pumping faster when you go on air, no matter how experienced – but 𝗮𝗱𝗿𝗲𝗻𝗮𝗹𝗶𝗻 𝗶𝘀 𝗮𝗹𝘀𝗼 𝗮 𝘂𝘀𝗲𝗳𝘂𝗹 𝘁𝗼𝗼𝗹, if you’re well prepared. · 𝗔𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆𝘀 𝘀𝗹𝗼𝘄 𝗱𝗼𝘄𝗻. Take a breath before you start speaking. If you think you talk slowly, go even slower; I should have in this interview. It adds gravitas and people will buy in to what you’re saying. · 𝗦𝗲𝗶𝘇𝗲 𝘁𝗵𝗲 𝗼𝗽𝗽𝗼𝗿𝘁𝘂𝗻𝗶𝘁𝘆. Remember you’re speaking potentially to more people than you’ll meet in your life, on a national radio or TV interview. And above all, 𝗲𝗻𝗷𝗼𝘆 𝗶𝘁! That may sound bonkers. But any broadcast interview rattles along at breakneck speed. It’ll be over before you know it – and if you haven’t done anything wrong (that’s crisis comms) then it can be fun. *** Back to the subject matter in hand, and if anyone you know (or their family/ friends) need support with an eye cancer diagnosis or treatment Ocular Melanoma UK is a haven of knowledge and community. While the Victoria Cohen Eye Cancer Charitable Trust helps fund aspiring oncologists across the world – saving the eyes, lives and vision of many.
