🇮🇳 India now has among the highest US tariffs of any country. This is a threat to Modi's 'Make in India' drive... Today, the US began imposing an additional 25 per cent tariff on imported goods from India over New Delhi's purchase of Russian oil. This was on top of an existing 25 per cent "reciprocal" tariff that took effect in early August. The US import duties of up to 50 per cent are a threat to Indian prime minister Narendra Modi's economic transformation agenda and efforts to attract foreign direct investment. Foreign investors have shown strong interest to enter the Indian market, with $81bn of gross headline FDI inflows in FY2025. But net FDI flows – which accounts for repatriations, divestments and outflows – hit a record low of $353mn in FY2025 (see chart). Export-oriented sectors, like textiles, gems and shrimps, are already facing challenges from higher duties on shipments to the US, India's largest single export market. In an independence day speech on August 15, Modi initiated a 100-day action plan for "next-generation" reforms. These include simplification of India's complex goods and services taxes. The aim is to boost domestic consumption of India-made goods and mitigate tariff effects on India's burgeoning manufacturing industries. How do you think these US tariffs will impact Modi's economic transformation agenda and FDI attraction? And will his reforms be enough to protect India's economy? Let us know below 💬 Great to work with Ethan Penny on this and speak to experts such as Kavan Bhandary, Suranjali Tandon and Naresh Chandra for their analysis. #india #fdi #trade #tariffs #modi #reforms

🇳🇴 Is OpenAI's Stargate Norway project a double-edged sword for locals? The ChatGPT maker's plan for an AI data centre of up to 230MW capacity in the Narvik region has raised concerns among local stakeholders. The project, in collaboration with Aker Solutions and Nscale, aims to leverage the region's abundant hydropower, currently the cheapest in Europe. It marks successful public-private collaboration off the back of national data centre strategies in 2018 and 2021 to prepare suitable sites for energy intensive industrial development. But some locals worry that this project will increase electricity prices and the surplus power could be put to better use. Just 65 direct jobs are expected to be created by its initial 20MW phase in construction and operations. The strategic project could create many more opportunities if it reaches its full scale of 230MW, requiring up to 100,000 NVIDIA GPUs. Nonetheless, local politicians argue Norway requires a national strategy to balance rapid data centre development with community needs. Norway aims to become the world's most digitalised country before 2030, but at what cost? Interested to hear your thoughts on balancing technological advancement with local community needs #datacenters #sustainability #AI #Norway #OpenAI

Sailun aims to tap into rising demand across Africa, Europe and the Middle East, using Egypt’s strategic location as a regional export hub. Real estate’s $92bn comeback: The FDI boom no one’s talking about FDI in real estate just hit a six-year high — and it’s still rising While AI and semiconductors dominate the headlines, real estate is staging a steady comeback. According to The fDi Report 2025, the sector attracted $92.2bn in foreign direct investment in 2024, its highest total since 2018 and a 13.4% rise year-on-year. Project numbers also surged, reaching 1,182 globally, up 26.5% from 2023. As companies rethink supply chains and talent hubs, demand for offices, data centres and industrial space is quietly reshaping the FDI landscape. After four consecutive years of growth, 2024 marked a five-year high for real estate FDI — suggesting it’s more than a post-Covid rebound. Is this a short-term spike, or are we underestimating real estate’s strategic role in global investment? #RealEstateFDI #ThefDiReport2025
