It’s an interesting and difficult time in the labour market. Official stats today confirm UK unemployment has risen slightly again and vacancies are lower. REC’s most recent #ReportOnJobs (ROJ) found candidate availability is now the highest it has been since COVID. But businesses tell us they need to invest and hire if they are to grow. Some sectors are pushing on - ROJ found this to be case in construction and engineering - but others are adopting a wait and see attitude. Recruiting and retaining talent has never been more important. Which is why yesterday’s FT Forums for HRDs yesterday was right up my street. Our exam question: ‘How to Recruit and Retain the Workforce of the Future’. Anna Thomas MBE & I did our best to set the scene, brilliantly guided by Michael Skapinker. And we and the room of experts covered it all: * #AI - how to do it well and why this can be the exception of where businesses will invest right now; * The opportunities vs challenges presented by having up to 5 generations in the workforce today; * The value of deep #skills mapping and proper #workforce planning. The discussion was rich and insightful. One that should inform every top table on how enhance productivity and achieve growth by building their core asset: their people. But as Neil and I had the opportunity to tell BBC News this morning, business cannot get there alone. It needs Treasury to really get to grips with economic performance and ease the pressure on business. The National Insurance rises have stripped most employers of their ability to invest in their workforce. Government came to power with a big agenda. It’s major mission was to create the right conditions for growth. It’s really needed. I could go on. But this amazing graphic from Ludic Creatives does a far better job of explaining what I mean than my long LinkedIn post could ever! Now this is talent…

👀 In case you missed it - the key messages that came out of the Business and Nature webinar, hosted by FT Executive Programmes and InTent. Our CEO Eva Zabey joined André Hoffmann (Founder, InTent), Marcelo Medeiros (Founder and Chair, re.green and Lanx Capital Investimentos) and Santiago Gowland (CEO, Rainforest Alliance) for an insightful conversation on humanity’s reliance on the natural world. Ideas that stood out: 💡 All of the world’s GDP - and all of the world’s supply chains - are reliant on nature and its resources 💡 Businesses have embraced climate agendas, but they must go hand-in-hand with nature to have real impact 💡 Providing businesses with the right measures and frameworks helps them make the best decisions for nature See more, nicely summarized in the cartoon below 💡👇 #NaturePositive #NatureIsEveryonesBusiness
