About us

What we do might surprise you! AARP is a nonprofit, nonpartisan, social mission organization with a membership of nearly 38 million. Our aim is to disrupt outdated stereotypes about aging, turn goals and dreams into real possibilities, and fight for the issues that matter most to people 50-plus, their families and communities. Our social impact work in health security, financial resilience, and personal fulfillment is at the heart of what we do. With offices in every state plus the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and the U.S. Virgin Islands, we live and work in the communities we serve. We listen to what people need and want, and offer programs, services and trusted information that are directly relevant to them. State offices also work with our national office to amplify our members’ voices at the local and federal levels to help empower people 50 and above to choose how they live and work as they age. From being a force for positive change to producing the nation’s largest-circulation magazine – the full scope of what we do might surprise you! That’s why people who are excited by unique opportunities and galvanized by meaningful challenges come to work at AARP.

Age discrimination remains a persistent and pervasive problem in workplaces across the country. Older job seekers are often told they are overqualified or have “too much experience,” and older workers often experience subtle signals that their presence is less valued – such as jokes about generational differences or assumptions that they are technologically inept. What’s more, age bias doesn’t just hurt individual workers. It costs the U.S. economy an estimated $850 billion in gross domestic product in 2018, a number that could rise to $3.9 trillion by 2050.   Simply put, age discrimination is bad for business. AARP is taking action to address this problem, both on a national scale and at the state and local level. We are fighting for legislation and programs that protect older workers, ensure fair treatment, and highlight the value and expertise they bring to an organization. And this week, our Chief Advocacy and Engagement Officer Nancy LeaMond testified before the Senate Special Committee on Aging about the impact of age discrimination in the workplace.    Thank you to Nancy and her team, and to our dedicated AARP volunteers who joined them on Capitol Hill this week. I spent yesterday morning on Capitol Hill testifying at a Senate Aging Committee hearing about age discrimination -- an under-discussed and under-recognized issue that has real implications for older Americans who are working longer than ever before – whether it’s because they want to or because it’s what they need to do to make ends meet.   Close to two-thirds of workers age 50-plus say they’ve seen or experienced age discrimination, and 40% of job seekers over 45 say they’ve faced it when looking for work. This is undermining the financial stability of too many capable Americans and it’s economically damaging to our country. Simply put, sidelining experienced workers is a loss we cannot afford.   Thank you to Senators Scott and Gillibrand for the opportunity to testify and for working in a bipartisan way to highlight issues important to older adults.   And a big shout out to AARP’s Capitol Hill Strike Force for showing up strong! #olderadults #advocacy #olderworkers

Earlier this week at the Senate Special Committee on Aging hearing, AARP’s Nancy LeaMond delivered a powerful message: sidelining older workers is a loss our economy cannot afford. She was joined by AARP volunteers who brought grassroots advocacy to Capitol Hill, showing lawmakers the strength and passion of our community. ➡️ Nearly 2 out of 3 workers age 50+ have seen or experienced age discrimination. ➡️ This bias costs the U.S. economy an estimated $850 billion in lost GDP — a figure projected to grow if left unaddressed. ➡️ Older workers bring experience, skill, and dedication — yet too often face subtle (and not-so-subtle) barriers when seeking jobs. AARP is calling on Congress to advance bipartisan reforms that: ➡️ Restore and strengthen protections against workplace discrimination. ✔️ Ensure fair treatment for job seekers of all ages. ✔️ Promote inclusive hiring practices — including responsible use of AI. 👥 Workers 75+ are the fastest-growing group in the labor force. We cannot let bias push them aside. It’s time to build workplaces where every generation has the opportunity to contribute and thrive. “Simply put, sidelining workers is a loss we cannot afford." About two-thirds of workers 50 and older have seen or experienced age discrimination in the workplace, according to a recent AARP survey. Age bias doesn’t just hurt individual workers, it costs the U.S. economy billions in lost revenue and potential. Nancy LeaMond, AARP chief advocacy and engagement officer, recently spoke to U.S. Senate lawmakers urging them to strengthen protections for older workers. Today, AARP's Nancy LeaMond is speaking before a U.S. Senate hearing focused on protecting older Americans in the workplace. The hearing, “Protecting Older Americans: Leveling the Playing Field for Older Workers,” is focused on the challenges older workers face, and the solutions that can ensure fairness and opportunity at every stage of work. Older workers are a vital part of today’s economy. They bring experience, leadership, and resilience, yet too often, they encounter barriers that limit their opportunities. AARP research shows: • 90% of workers age 50+ believe age discrimination is common • 64% have seen or experienced it firsthand • 40% of job seekers 45+ report facing it during the hiring process That’s why we are fighting for bipartisan solutions like the: • Protecting Older Americans Act (POAA) • Protecting Older Workers Against Discrimination Act (POWADA) • Protect Older Job Applicants Act (POJA) Today’s discussion is an important opportunity to shine a light on these issues and highlight the steps needed to ensure older workers have a fair shot.

By using AI tools, seasoned professionals can streamline the résumé-writing process and ensure their experience stands out to employers (and applicant tracking systems). Start with a strong template: Use AI-powered résumé builders or writing tools (such as ChatGPT, Grammarly, or résumé-specific platforms) to generate a professional template tailored to your industry. Customize for each job: Paste the job description into the AI tool and ask it to tailor your résumé or cover letter to highlight relevant skills and keywords. This helps you align with applicant tracking systems (ATS). Showcase your achievements: Ask AI to help you turn job duties into quantifiable achievements. For example, instead of "managed a team," AI can help you say, "led a team of 10 to increase sales by 20%." Check for clarity and tone: Use AI to review your writing for clarity, brevity, and a professional tone. AI can help eliminate jargon or repetitive phrases. Proofread and personalize: Don’t rely solely on AI. Carefully review the final draft to ensure it accurately reflects your experience and personality. Add specific details or anecdotes that make your application unique. Always be mindful when sharing information about yourself online, especially when using digital tools. Highlight transferable skills: If you’re changing industries or roles, prompt the AI to emphasize skills and experiences that are relevant to your new target job. AI can provide a great starting point, but always find ways to add your own voice. Hiring managers appreciate authenticity and a personal touch. How are you leveraging AI in your job search? Share your tips or questions for others below.

Many of us struggle to set healthy boundaries at work. We asked a millennial and a Gen Xer to share how they maintain work-life balance — what works and where they still struggle. See how their experiences align, how they differ and how hearing each other’s perspectives shifted their view on self-care. When we connect across generations or backgrounds, we deepen our understanding of others as well as ourselves. #Selfcare #Boundaries #Intergenerational #OfficeCulture #WorkLife #AARP
