With limited bandwidth, we can only spend 10-15 seconds per application before deciding whether to disqualify it or move it forward for further consideration. Here are the top five deal-breakers we’ve come across and how to instantly fix them: 1️⃣ Wrong company name or placeholders left in the application (e.g. {{INSERT_COMPANY_NAME}}) This one is straightforward yet surprisingly common. Countless cover letters mistakenly refer to the wrong company, people, or industries. 2️⃣ Leaving ChatGPT footnotes when copy-pasting applications There is nothing wrong with using AI. At this stage, most startup founders tend to read every email. 5️⃣ Not tailoring applications for early-stage startups We’re a startup—things are imperfect, and processes are often unstructured. Lead with your most relevant experience and key accomplishments, visible within 10 seconds over 9 pages.
