About us
The Alliance for Tribal Energy 501(c)(3) is an Indigenous-led nonprofit that supports the self-determined efforts of Native American tribes to transition away from extractive and exploitive energy systems to a clean and regenerative energy future. Formerly known as the Indigenous Energy Initiative (IEI), the organization was founded in 2016 by Chéri Smith, a woman of Native American and European descent with 20+ years of senior leadership and consulting roles with organizations including Tesla/SolarCity, U.S. Department of Energy, Interstate Renewable Energy Council, American Council on Renewable Energy, New York State Energy Research and Development Authority, and Boston University. The organization is guided by a Native-led board and leadership team that includes experienced tribal government, business, cultural, and spiritual leaders, ensuring that we uphold Indigenous values and honor Native lifeways in all we do. Our diverse and growing team of staff and contractors includes Indigenous and non-Indigenous energy experts with specialties in renewable energy technology, policy, finance, education, and workforce development.

Alliance for Tribal Clean Energy for Tribal Clean Energy head of policy, Dr. Crystal Miller took the stage today at AESP Flex Connect for a fireside chat with AESP ‘s amazing President & CEO, Jennifer Szaro ! Together, these two powerhouses explored how data and microgrids can be tools of sovereignty—driving transmission, meaningful consultation, and community benefit. This Flex Connect focused on Making the Pieces Fit: Building Integrated Energy Solutions reminded us to break the silos and bring together energy efficiency and renewables through demand flexibility to create holistic, human-centric solutions. Attendees learned how energy efficiency, demand flexibility, and emerging technologies can work together to reduce demand, optimize performance, and deliver greater value. From recognizing Tribrs as sovereign nations to unpacking trust and treaty responsibilities, the conversation offered a powerful lens on policy, governance, and the path forward for inclusive energy resilience. It was a conference highlight and a testament to the impact when diverse expertise and leadership come together. 🤝 #AESPFlexConnect #MakingThePiecesFit #PolicyInAction #TribalSovereignty #DataSovereignty #WomenInEnergy #EnergyPolicy #CommunityBenefit #TribalCleanEnergy

Rumors confirmed. The notices have gone out, and this administration has reached a new low. With the stroke of a pen and in blatant disregard for its commitments, the federal trust responsibility, and the urgent needs of the most energy-burdened communities in our country, they officially moved to terminate every Solar for All grant in the country. Then followed it up with a heinous E.O. Are we great yet? "The purpose of this communication is to notify you that, pursuant to the One Big Beautiful Bill Act (OBBBA), Pub. L. No. 119-21 (July 4, 2025), the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) is hereby terminating Assistance Agreement No. XXXXX awarded to XXXXX. Section 60002 of OBBBA repeals the underlying authority for the Solar for All program at Section 134 of the Clean Air Act, 42 U.S.C. 7434, and rescinds unobligated amounts to carry out Section 134. The repeal of the grant appropriations in CAA 134(a)(1)-(3), coupled with the rescission of the administrative appropriation in section 134(a)(4), effectively and completely terminated the statutory authority and all appropriations related to Solar for All. As both the grant appropriations and the EPA’s administrative cost appropriation are rescinded, the Agency no longer possesses either the substantive legal authority or the financial appropriations needed to continue implementation, oversight or monitoring for waste, fraud, or abuse of these grants or of Solar for All. Thus, any attempt to continue the program’s administration, in the absence of any authorizing legislation or appropriated funds for that purpose, is no longer legally permissible. The EPA has been weighing options for the future of the Solar for All program and has made the decision to terminate the SFA program and existing grants because the EPA no longer has a statutory basis or dedicated funding to continue administering and overseeing the nearly $7 billion outlay to approximately 60 grant recipients. Congress has made its intent clear—via a repeal of the statutory authorization and all appropriated funding for the program and the administrative burdens of implementing and overseeing the program—that the SFA program is no longer to operate." #SolarForAll #EnergyJustice #TribalSovereignty #TribalCleanEnergy
