We are deeply saddened by the passing of Agnes “Aggie” Gund, an extraordinary philanthropist, arts advocate, and changemaker. A longtime champion of museums and artists, Aggie served as President of the Museum of Modern Art and founded the Art for Justice Fund, using art as a catalyst for social change. Her visionary generosity and steadfast commitment to equity and access in the arts have inspired generations. We are grateful for her support of the American Federation of Arts and her lifelong dedication to ensuring that art remains a force for justice and connection. Our thoughts are with her family, friends, and all who were touched by her remarkable legacy.

Join us for an unforgettable evening at the 2025 Gala & Cultural Leadership Awards on November 10th at the stunning Guastavino’s in NYC! 🎨💫 🖼️ This year, we will honor three extraordinary people: Christian Levett: art collector, philanthropist, and founder of the Female Artists of the Mougins Museum, Europe’s first major museum dedicated exclusively to female artists. Howardena Pindell: pioneering artist, educator, and advocate whose groundbreaking work has expanded the discourse on race, gender, and equity in contemporary art. Ann Temkin: The Marie-Josée and Henry Kravis Chief Curator of Painting and Sculpture at The Museum of Modern Art. This year’s Gala celebrates the AFA’s Women in Art Initiative, which shines a light on the contributions of women artists, curators, and cultural leaders, past and present, while also supporting the AFA’s broader exhibitions program. From Levett’s visionary museum dedicated to women artists, to Temkin’s trailblazing curatorial work, to Pindell’s fearless practice, our honorees embody the Initiative’s spirit and impact. 🎟️Contact events@amfedarts or click the link in our bio to reserve your seat today! 📷: * Christian Levett at home in front of Grace Hartigan, Two Women (Daisy Aldan & Olga Petroff), 1954, oil on canvas, 137 × 91 cm. What does it mean to create a contemporary museum for the 21st century? Museums face the ongoing challenge of linking past art with future audiences. In July, Michael Govan shared with the Observer how he is addressing this challenge and the needs of the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA)'s community through the museum's architectural expansion. In reflection of the museum's renovation, Govan explained how his team "had a vision of creating something truly unique—rooted in our locality but with a global perspective. And we’re incredibly excited about what we’ve been able to achieve." Learn more about Michael Govan's leadership at our next Director's Dialogue on September 10th! 🎟️ Reserve your free ticket through the link in our bio! American Federation of Arts reposted this
Today, I was fortunate to attend the symposium "ArtViews: Gender and Cultural Norms" organized by the American Federation of Arts in collaboration with A.I.R. Gallery (Artists-In-Residence Gallery). I had one of the most enriching experiences in a long time. In-depth panel topics and brilliant speakers who provide invaluable insights into the art market with the perspective of key stakeholders - artists, art managers, community organizers, collectors, curators, researchers, matrons/patrons, analysts, critics, and, of course, viewers. We all represent the ecosystem we are building, adding to the work that previous generations of women in the arts did and what the following generation will continue to do. The event was free to attend, but the experience was absolutely priceless, and I hope this symposium will have future editions, as the dialog needs to continue. Shout out to the American Art Federation team and Pauline Forlenza, the A.I.R. Gallery, and its leadership for bringing us all together in the welcoming space at BRIC Arts & Media. I have so many thoughts to share with you, but I will keep this post short and express my gratitude and appreciation to all the panelists, organizers, and participants I had the pleasure of meeting today.
