Last week, with support from the Mellon Foundation, we hosted an invitational convening, entitled "Creating Future Memory," that brought together 150+ visual artists, legacy professionals, funders, and cultural workers to explore pressing questions surrounding artists' legacies and their vital importance for the future of our field and our cultural history. With gratitude to all the participants, we will be synthesizing key themes and voices from the gathering to produce a report to the field that advocates for a more inclusive, sustainable, and artist-centered future for legacy care. Join us this year as we celebrate #JoanMitchell100, launching February 12! Throughout 2025, the Foundation is celebrating the centennial of Joan Mitchell’s birth (February 12, 1925) with a robust series of programs and events—anchored by presentations of her work in museums around the world—in collaboration with museum partners in the United States and France, where Mitchell lived for much of her life. This year’s festivities include an online class on Mitchell, a lecture series in France, an exhibition at David Zwirner New York, and other programs. The Foundation also will significantly expand the information about Mitchell’s life and creative context made available through our website and social media, including digitally releasing a documentary film on Mitchell that has been unavailable for many years.
