Somewhere, at some time today, a maintenance technician will be sitting at the table with their family. Finally relaxing, finally enjoying a moment they’ve earned a hundred times over, when their phone buzzes. A leak. A broken heater. An emergency that can’t wait. In that moment, they do what maintenance professionals do every single day: They put their plate down, They stand up from the table, They apologize to their family, and they take care of someone else’s. Most people will never see that sacrifice. Most will never realize how many holidays, birthdays, and dinners were interrupted… The number of moments missed. Today, we see it. Today, we appreciate it. Today, we say THANK YOU. To the technicians who are on call this Thanksgiving, we are grateful for you. Your work is not invisible. Disruption in action. In a central location on the #OpTech2025 conference floor, you saw a pile of cardboard boxes, green duct tape, with a hand written poster board with their company’s name on it. It was my partner, AppWork. As I entered the expo hall I noticed a location that was surrounded by people, engaged with their sales team, taking photos of their booth, and learning about what they do. In a sea of similar on the expo floor, the team at AppWork said, we are different. They didn’t say it with words or a carefully curated social media post. They said it with action. They built a mound of cardboard boxes and placed it in the middle of the expo floor. I spoke with Sean Landsberg, CAM, AppWork’s CEO, and he said by far this was their most successful conference. For those of you nervous about standing out, now is the time. As multifamily only gets noisier, now is the time to actually stand out. Do something that’s different. Something that’s unique. Something that’s daring. We are all waiting for it. I’m proud of my partners at AppWork for putting their actions where their mouth is. I’m not sure it gets any better than this. Yesterday, the AppWork team and I surprised Christopher, a maintenance technician for the Sares Regis Group, in Las Vegas with $1,000. He started as a temp at the property, and through hard work and dedication, he has grown into a full time employee at his Las Vegas property. When we surprised him, he was working in an occupied apt, and he was physically shook. He has a big family, and plans to use the money for his family and family needs. Thank you Tina West, CPM for submitting Christopher’s name.
