About us

The Boston Foundation is one of the nation’s first and most impactful community foundations, with $1.9 billion in assets. Partnering with community members, donors, the public sector, businesses and nonprofits, we exist to close the gaps caused by our city’s greatest disparities, to advance economic justice, and to help build a better Boston. We collect data, commission research, share knowledge, develop dynamic programs, fuel new ideas and fund change. Our work informs public policy, catalyzes conversations and advocates not only for change, but for repair of the historical harms of inequity. Ultimately, we aim to support, contribute and create well-being and opportunity within our communities. TBF is also one of New England’s largest grantmakers, supporting nonprofits in Greater Boston through our endowment and working closely with our donors to support nonprofits locally, nationally and internationally.

  • It's #GivingTuesday — a day to celebrate the power of philanthropy and give back to the nonprofits that are the heart of our community as they face more challenges than ever. With today kicking off the giving season, our Season of Giving 2025: TBF Giving Guide is designed to help you discover meaningful opportunities to support the causes that inspire you most. • Did you see your name in the Boston Globe yesterday? Every year we partner with the Globe to recognize our amazing community of donors who have supported our Annual Fund for Civic Leadership, which fuels all that we do as your community foundation. Over the past year this support has helped us bring research, advocacy, and community voices to the forefront of policymaking in Greater Boston. We've come together to explore challenges facing our communities and to inform a civic agenda that advances equity, opportunity and justice. With you by our side we continue to lead together, meeting the moment on efforts to address food insecurity, advance wage equity, strengthen maternal health outcomes, expand access to early education and care, address the region’s housing crisis, and more. As we look ahead, your support will ensure that this momentum continues. The challenges facing our people and communities remain complex — but with your help, we can drive the change our region needs. "People always ask us how it has been for our community. I say of course, difficult. Things are tough. But our people are tougher." On Monday we had the honor of spending time with LEF's community partner Revival Chelsea, an organization providing vital food distribution for families across the city. We learned, we shared, and most importantly we came together for our community. Deep gratitude to every volunteer who showed up to ensure Chelsea residents received a nutritious and dignified Thanksgiving meal. ¡Pa’lante! • Happy Thanksgiving from all of us at the Boston Foundation! We are immensely grateful for the community of Greater Boston: a place that cares, with people who are dedicated and generous, and where we nourish our families and support our neighbors. We are ever grateful for the people of this region and our leaders for their courageous and bold leadership on behalf of our caring community. Your leadership, your urgency, and your deep commitment keep the people of Greater Boston at the center of all we do. During this season of thanks and giving we're immensely grateful to our donors who fuel change, driven by their desire to help build more equitable communities, who choose to partner with TBF to strengthen the impact of their giving. Time and time again, TBF's generous donors step up to support our community in times of crisis. To date more than $6.2 million has been raised in connection with the Meeting the Moment: Sustaining Families initiative, including $800,000 from TBF’s donor-advised fund holders for grants directly to food-related nonprofits. Today and every day we are proud and thankful to be your community foundation.

    • “I am proud to be in Massachusetts, where so many leaders and people from all walks of life are stepping up for their neighbors. At TBF, we are especially thankful to our partners and the family of Boston Foundation donors, whose support of Meeting the Moment and dozens of other organizations are making our communities stronger and providing care for those facing immediate needs.” Lee Pelton, President and CEO, the Boston Foundation. • As many of us prepare to celebrate Thanksgiving, others don’t know where their next meal is coming from: one in five households in Boston experiences food insecurity and when federal aid is cut the impact lands hardest on our most vulnerable neighbors. With SNAP and other programs under continuing threat, it's up to all of us to support our food systems and feed everyone who calls our community home. This year we are especially grateful to the partners and donors who have stepped up in support of our neighbors and the organizations working tirelessly to make sure everyone in Greater Boston has access to food. Together we have already distributed $4.6 million – and we're not done. • During this week where we gather to nurture our community, we're pleased to highlight the 61 latest grantee organizations of TBF's Meeting the Moment: Sustaining Families initiative, exemplifying the generosity and spirit of this work each and every day. Each of these 61 organizations plays a key role in Greater Boston’s food ecosystem, supporting food pantries, providers, distributors and food-related businesses under threat and facing increased demand. Through the generosity of our donors, deep connections to trusted partners, and an unrelenting commitment to making our community stronger, together we are stepping up to support our most vulnerable neighbors in a time of crisis. BECMA has a new home. Last week, we marked our 10th anniversary by welcoming supporters, friends, family and neighbors into our new space in Nubian Square with a wall signing, tour and brief remarks. This permanent headquarters and sustainability hub will house BECMA staff and programming while also supporting mission-aligned partners. Securing a home base strengthens our future and reinforces the importance of ownership across our community. We thank Boston City Councilor-At-Large Ruthzee Louijeune, City of Boston's Chief of Economic Opportunity and Inclusion Segun Idowu and Rep. Chynah Tyler for joining us and sharing remarks. Nubian Square is a neighborhood with a strong history of culture and economic development - our new home will expand opportunities for the people and businesses of color rooted in the area. Thank you to our donors—the City of Boston Planning & Development Agency, the Barr Foundation, The Boston Foundation, The Impact Collective and Eastern Bank—for supporting this milestone as we continue raising funds for the Sustainability Hub through our BECMA@10 campaign. 📍 becma.org/donate

  • "I was inspired by the creativity, resilience, and deep commitment organizations bring to supporting their communities. It gave me a broader view of the ecosystem and reminded me that there’s incredible strength across our state," SNG Reviewer Tre’Andre Carmel Valentine, Mass Transgender Political Coalition Executive Director. We know the value of supporting local organizations doing important work right now as nonprofit leaders see their work being made more difficult while demand for their services rises across every community and area of need. From a special round of safety net grants to an analysis of more than 500 responses from nonprofit partners, plus ESOL for work and the humanizing force of art during this turbulent time, we cover some of our efforts to meet the moment in the Fall 2025 edition of TBF News. As we face a daily onslaught of new alarms and challenges, TBF, with our partners, will use every tool we have—starting with research, listening, and learning and extending to convening, advocacy, and funding—to respond.
