  • The tree grove at Palmer Square Park just got a BIG honor! The 7.69-acre Logan Square community park, created as part of Chicago’s historic boulevard system in the early 1870s & incorporated into Chicago Park District in 2013, is celebrating the official accreditation as a Level I arboretum by the ArbNet Arboretum Accreditation Program. Read more about the honor at https:// bit.ly/4pManYb. This is the first Chicago Park District location to be designated as an accredited arboretum through ArbNet, administered by The Morton Arboretum & the only accreditation program in the world specific to arboreta. Thanks to the initiative of the Homeowners Association of Palmer Square that submitted the park for consideration after 45 years of being active caretakers of the green space. The designation recognizes the park’s commitment to growing and maintaining a thriving tree canopy and preserving a variety of tree species at Palmer Square Park, located at 2200 N. Kedzie Ave., including a collection of over 28 varieties of trees and a historic elm grove. Program speakers included: -->Dr. Murphy Westwood, The Morton Arboretum’s Vice President of Science and Conservation -->Steve Hier, founder of the Homeowners Association of Palmer Square -->JR Roldan, Chicago Park District Area Manager & Michael Brown, Chicago Park District Deputy Director of Natural Resources

  • It's #DisabilityPrideMonth & we're proud to celebrate the 35th Anniversary of the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) being signed into law! The passage of the ADA was & still is a catalyst for the inclusion of people with disabilities in all aspects of life, including access to recreation programs #InTheParks. At the Chicago Park District, it's in our mission to ensure that parks & programs are accessible & available to individuals with disabilities & their families. Toward that goal, we have recently unveiled several new accessibility renovations, and there are many others in design and coming on line very soon at more than 80 fieldhouses citywide. ➕To enhance summer fun for all, 16 of our beaches feature a wheelchair accessible beach walk, 8 offer free use of a beach wheelchair. ➕Adaptive sailing, pontoon fishing & golf programs for youth & veterans, as well as specialized summer camps serving youth with intellectual, physical or hearing disabilities are ongoing at 25 locations throughout the city. ➕Fall registration for Special Recreation programs opens on Aug. 4 & 5 at chicagoparkdistrict.com. #NationalDisabilityIndependenceDay
